How to Let Go of the Past: Rewrite the Clause That Keeps You There

How to Let Go of the Past: Rewrite the Clause That Keeps You There

Here is how to let go of the past: find the agreement you made with it, the silent clause that says “because this happened, my life must stay this way,” and rewrite that clause from who you are now. Letting go is realignment. The memory stays, and the meaning you gave it changes. When the meaning changes, the past loosens its hold and your energy comes home to the present.

I want to show you this the way I show my private clients, dear one. Gently, in your body, with a practice you can do today.

What Letting Go Truly Is

Many people imagine letting go as forgetting. As if the goal is to erase what happened and never think of it again.

Have you noticed that the harder you try to forget something, the more often it returns?

Letting go is something far more graceful. It is the moment the past becomes a chapter in your story and stops being the author of it. You still remember. You simply no longer organize your life around the memory.

I think of it as realignment. Your soul has a natural inner resonance, a delight that is uniquely yours, as distinct as your thumbprint. Painful experiences lay layers over it. Letting go of the past is the clearing of those layers, so your life lines up again with who you truly are.

Your delight was never damaged by what happened. It was only covered.

Why You Can’t Let Go of the Past

If you have tried to move on and found yourself pulled back again and again, nothing is wrong with you. There are real reasons the past holds on.

The body remembers. Unfinished emotion stays in the body until it completes. A smell, a song or a tone of voice can bring it rushing back. You can read more about this in how to release negative emotions from the body.

The pattern feels familiar. People can become addicted to so-called negative emotions, a pattern I call Negative Energy Addiction. Replaying the old story produces a familiar chemistry, and the body seeks what is familiar. This is why patterns keep repeating until we go to the original source.

The Tiny Mind is guarding you. Your Tiny Mind, the part of you devoted to fear and survival, believes that holding on to the memory keeps you safe. “If I remember how it hurt, I will never let it happen again.” It is trying to protect you. It just uses an old map.

There is a clause. This is the one most people never find, so let me show you.

The Trauma Clause in Your Soul Contract

Your soul carries agreements. Some are ancient and beautiful: your mission, your gifts, the people you came here to love. Others were written in moments of pain, often without you realizing you were signing anything.

A trauma clause is an agreement made in the aftermath of something painful. It sounds like this:

“Because I was abandoned, I will never fully let anyone in.”

“Because I failed then, I will play small from now on.”

“Because that happened to me, I am someone things happen to.”

Read those slowly. Does one of them sound familiar?

These clauses made sense at the time. They were survival decisions. But a clause written in one moment of pain keeps operating for decades unless it is rewritten. You keep living by its terms long after the danger has passed. That is what it feels like to be stuck in the past: an old agreement still running your present.

The beautiful truth is that you hold the pen. You signed the clause, so you can rewrite it. I teach a similar process for money in releasing scarcity clauses in your soul contract, and the same principle applies to every area of life.

And let me be very clear about something. A trauma clause does not mean you caused what happened to you. Some things come from forces far beyond any one person, and they are never yours to carry as blame. The clause is only the meaning you made afterward to survive. Your power lives in what you choose to make of it now.

A Story From My Own Life

In my early twenties, I was trafficked and held captive. I was tortured and nearly killed, and I escaped.

I will not describe it further. What matters here is what came after.

For a long time, I carried a clause that said, in effect, “the world is not safe, so I must always be ready to run.” It kept me alive when I needed it. And years later it was still running, long after I was free. It shaped how I rested, how I loved and how much I let myself hope.

Then, in 1998, a doctor told me I would never walk again. I could have written another clause that day: “My body is broken, and so is my future.” I chose to write a different one. I walk today.

The past did not disappear. What changed was the agreement I held with it. Today those experiences live in me as wisdom, as compassion and as fierce faith in what is possible for anyone. I share them with you only because I know, in my own bones, that the past can be rewritten from the inside.

Practice: Rewrite the Clause

Give yourself twenty quiet minutes and a notebook. Go slowly. Stop if you feel flooded, and come back another day.

  1. Name the memory. Write one sentence about the past experience you are ready to let go of. Only one sentence. You do not need to relive it.
  2. Find the clause. Below it, write: “Because this happened, I decided…” and let the sentence finish itself. Write whatever comes, even if it surprises you.
  3. Thank the clause. Place your hand on your heart and say, “You kept me safe when I needed it. Thank you. I release you now.”
  4. Write the new clause. From the self you are today, write the new agreement. “Because I lived through this, I know how strong I am. I choose to let love in.” Write it in the present tense.
  5. Feel it in your body. Read the new clause aloud three times. Notice where your body softens or lifts. Breathe into that place.
  6. Seal it with delight. Do one small thing today that the new clause would do. Call a friend. Wear the color you love. Say yes to something.

Step six matters. A new agreement becomes real through action. Each time you live by it, your nervous system learns that the new terms are safe.

How to Let Go of the Past in a Relationship

Old relationships leave clauses too, and they often follow you into new love.

Maybe a past partner was unfaithful, and now you check your new partner’s phone. Maybe you were criticized constantly, and now you brace for criticism that never comes. The person in front of you is new, but the agreement you are living by is old.

If this is your situation, do the practice above with one specific memory from that relationship. Then, when the old fear rises in your current relationship, pause and ask: “Is this happening now, or is this the old clause speaking?” Simply asking that question loosens its grip.

If you are letting go of a person who is still in your heart, be gentle with yourself. Grief has its own rhythm. How to heal from heartbreak walks with you through that. And if you notice yourself pulling away from love just when it gets good, read self sabotaging relationships.

Sometimes the person you most need to release is yourself, the you who made choices you now regret. How to forgive yourself is written for that tender place.

How to Let Go and Be Happy

Here is what I have seen in countless sessions. When an old clause is rewritten, energy comes back. All the effort that went into holding the past in place becomes available for living.

That freed energy needs somewhere to go, so give it a direction. Ask yourself, “What do I desire now, from who I am today?” Desire is sacred. It is a catalyst for quantum leaps, and it pulls you forward when the past no longer holds you back. My guide on how to manifest shows you how to turn that desire into a life.

Happiness after letting go rarely arrives as fireworks. It often arrives quietly. A morning where you realize you did not think about it. A laugh that comes easily. A sense of lightness in the chest. These are signs your delight is rising back to the surface. How to feel joy again will show you how to welcome those moments and let them grow.

Questions You May Be Asking

How do I let go of the past and move forward?

Find the silent agreement you made after the painful experience, the clause that begins “because this happened, I decided…” Rewrite it from who you are today, feel the new clause in your body, and take one small action that lives by it. Moving forward follows naturally once the old agreement is released.

Why can’t I let go of the past?

The past holds on when emotion is still unfinished in the body, when an old pattern has become familiar, and when your Tiny Mind believes remembering keeps you safe. Most often there is also an unspoken clause still running your choices. When that clause is rewritten, the hold loosens.

How do I let go of the past in a relationship?

Notice when an old fear rises with your current partner and ask, “Is this happening now, or is this the old clause speaking?” Rewrite the clause that past relationship left behind. Then let your new partner be new, one moment at a time.

How do I let go and be happy?

Give the energy you free up a new direction by asking what you desire now, from who you are today. Welcome small moments of lightness and joy when they come. Happiness grows as your delight rises back to the surface.

You Hold the Pen

The past wrote some of your story. You get to write the rest.

Every clause you signed in pain can be rewritten in love. Your delight has been waiting beneath every one of them, ready to lead you forward the moment you set the old agreement down.
