“Become the version of you who already has it.” It’s one of the most popular teachings in the manifestation world, and it’s a lovely, polished way of telling you that you fall short.
If you have ever tried to dress, think and act like a future you who has the money, the love and the house, and ended up more exhausted than when you started, this article is for you. You do not need a new identity. You never did. You need to come home to the one you already have.
This is the written companion to the third episode of my Fight Series on Manifest with the Law of Delight, recorded raw and unscripted. Listen to the full episode for the waterfall practice in my voice.
The Years I Spent Performing Someone Else
I used to be a very Type A personality. High achiever. Always on, always moving, always the one who had it handled. And I never, ever talked about my trauma. I never let anyone see it.
I got very, very good at performing a version of me that everyone seemed to like better. I looked great on the outside. People clapped. People hired me. People thought I had it all together.
On the inside? I was bone tired. Performing someone you’re not, every single day, costs you everything.
The Tiny Mind and the Giant Heart
I wrote about this in Your Mission I’mPossible. There is a battle inside every one of us. On one side, the tiny mind. On the other, the giant heart, your soul.
Your tiny mind is the false identity. It’s the costume. It holds everything you ever picked up to stay safe. It talks fast, it talks loud, and it’s always worried about what other people think of you.
Your giant heart is your core. That’s the real you.
So when the manifestation world tells you to become a whole new version of yourself, it’s asking you to pick up one more costume, a shinier one the world will accept. And I’m here to tell you, gorgeous soul: you can put the costume down.
When people sit down with me one on one, so many of them tell me the same thing. “Something is missing. I feel a void.” I know exactly what’s missing. You are. The real you got buried under so many costumes you can’t feel yourself in there anymore. The good news? You just got covered up. And covered up is something we can address.
Point One: You Never Sell the House
Picture a beautiful home with big, gorgeous windows. Over the years the windows get dirty. Dust, water spots, fingerprints, smoke from a fire years ago. Now the light barely comes through.
Would you sell that house and buy a new one? Of course not. You’d wash the windows. You’d fix the roof. You’d clean out the plumbing.
That’s what healing is. Your core is as unique to you as you are, and it never needed changing. You strip the gunk off. You do the work. And then the light pours right through, the way it always wanted to.
Here’s the part I love. Once the windows are clean, you don’t have to imagine the light or visualize it or assume it. It just comes in, because it was always out there. It was waiting for a clean pane of glass.
Point Two: Shoes Two Sizes Too Small
“Act as if.” “Assume the feeling.” “Fake it till you make it.” “Become the character.”
It’s like squeezing your feet into shoes two sizes too small because those are the shoes successful people wear. Sure, for a while. Then you’re limping, your feet are bleeding, and you can’t figure out why you’re so tired.
Performance is exhausting because your heart already knows. Your heart is always watching, and it knows when you’re wearing somebody else’s shoes. When you live as the real you, your energy stops leaking into the performance and starts flowing into your true creations. That’s where your power comes back.
Point Three: Nothing About You Needs to Die
“Your old self has to die.” “Ego death.” It sounds very dramatic and very spiritual.
Darling, you don’t need to kill anything. Your ego is there to protect you. What falls away was never you.
Think of a ship that has been sailing for years with barnacles all over the hull. They slow it down and make it heavy. Does that ship need to be scrapped? No. You scrape the barnacles, and the very same ship sails faster and lighter than it has in years.
The barnacles are the beliefs other people handed you. The rules you had to follow to survive. Be quiet, be smaller, be louder, be nicer, be less, be more. My teaching in one breath: part healing, part transmutation, and part living the uniqueness and authenticity that is really you.
What You Do Only to Be Accepted
Here’s where the gunk gets real and practical. The layers you carry are the things you do only to be accepted. Not because you delight in them. Not because they’re true to your soul.
Laughing at a joke that isn’t funny. Saying yes to the event you dread. Dressing a certain way for a certain crowd. Shrinking your opinions at dinner. Over-explaining every choice you make. Every one of those is a layer, and every layer muffles your true note.
Let me be gentle here. Those layers did their job. They kept you safe once. You get to honor them in your own way and set them down, one at a time.
And when you lay down even one, life responds. People who love the real you move closer. People who only loved the costume drift away. That drift is freedom.

Practice: The Waterfall
- Sit somewhere you can put your feet up or flat on the floor. Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly, and breathe in slowly.
- Picture yourself standing under a beautiful waterfall, clear and soft and exactly the temperature you love.
- As the water pours over your head, your shoulders and down your back, watch every layer slide away. The mask you wear at the office. The smile you put on when you’re not okay. The voice you use to keep everyone comfortable. Every “be smaller” and “be bigger” anyone ever handed you.
- Dive under the water and look at yourself. Clean. Clear. That’s you, the real you.
- Hands on your heart, say out loud: “I claim my soul back. I claim my heart back. I claim all of me, and I love all of me. My core is whole. My core is unique. My core is mine.”
- Step out of the waterfall and feel the sun on your skin. Notice how light you feel.
- Open your eyes, go to a mirror, put your hand up to it, look straight into your own eyes and say: “Hi. I see you. Welcome home.”
You don’t need to become. You don’t need to leap. You don’t have to change. All you had to do was reclaim.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to change my self-concept to manifest?
No. Your core is already whole and unique. What changes your life is clearing the layers you picked up to be accepted, so the real you can show up and receive.
What’s wrong with “become the version of you who already has it”?
It asks you to perform a future identity, which keeps you in a costume and leaks your energy into the performance. Your heart knows the difference, and the exhaustion follows.
Is ego death necessary for spiritual growth?
Nothing about you needs to die. Your ego is there to protect you. What falls away are the beliefs and roles other people handed you, like barnacles scraped off a ship.
How do I find my true self again?
Start by noticing what you do only to be accepted, and lay one of those things down at a time. The waterfall practice in this article and in the episode is a beautiful place to begin.
Be delighted. 💋
