You have spent years trying to think your way into a better life. New thoughts, new affirmations, new self-talk. And somehow the old feelings keep rising first, before you have a chance to choose a single thought. So you start to wonder: do feelings come before thoughts?
They do. Your feelings fire first. And once you see that sequence clearly, you hold the faster way to change your life. Here is the answer to “do feelings come before thoughts” and what it means for everything you create.
Watch the full teaching above, then stay with me here, because this one truth shifts where you place all your attention.
The Sequence That Shapes Your Life
Here is the order. Watch it in yourself today and you will see it everywhere.
A feeling fires. That feeling triggers your self-talk. Your self-talk triggers your thinking. Your thinking drives your actions. And your actions create your life.
Feeling, self-talk, thinking, action, life.
Most approaches to change start in the middle of that chain. They ask you to change your thoughts. That is like trying to redirect a river halfway down the mountain. You fight the current the whole way.
When you start with the feeling, you begin at the spring. The whole river follows.
Do Feelings Come Before Thoughts? Yes, and Here Is Why
Think about the last time someone said something that stung. Before you had words for it, something already moved in you. A drop. A flash of hurt. A sting in your heart.
Only afterward did the thoughts arrive. “They never respect me.” “I always say the wrong thing.” “Why does this keep happening?”
The feeling came first. The thought was the story your mind wrote to explain it.
Your heart is 10,000 times more powerful than your mind. The heart field responds to life before the mind catches up. HeartMath research has explored this heart-first intelligence for decades, and it confirms what ancient traditions always knew: the heart leads.
This is why I teach heartset. Your heart is where the sequence begins, so your heart is where real change begins.
I go further into this in my teaching You Are Not Your Thoughts, where I show you what you truly are beneath the noise of the mind.
I Lived This
I know this sequence from the inside. There were years when my feelings ran my life before I ever knew they were in charge. A feeling would rise, the old self-talk would follow, and I would find myself making the same choices and living the same results.
Changing my thoughts gave me moments of relief. Changing what I felt changed my life.
When I began to meet my feelings first, to name them, honor them and return to delight beneath them, the whole chain shifted. My self-talk softened. My thinking cleared. My actions came from a different place. And my life rearranged itself around that new center.
Where Delight Fits in the Sequence
Underneath every feeling lives something deeper. Your delight.
The Law of Delight is the first universal law, the one that rules all 777 I have documented. It teaches that the universe delighted itself into being. Delight is the primordial catalyst of creation, and it is already present in you, unique as your thumbprint.
Fear, shame, grief and anger are real feelings. They are also layers. They sit over your delight the way clouds sit over the sun.
When you correct only your thoughts, the clouds stay. When you meet the feeling, the cloud moves, and the sun of your delight shines through. That delight then becomes the feeling that fires first. And a life that begins with delight unfolds very differently from a life that begins with fear.
This is how creation happens. Delight collapses quantum potential from the zero point field into form. The feeling you lead with becomes the life you live.
The Faster Way to Change Your Life
Let me show you how this plays out across your life.
In money, a flash of scarcity fires when the bill arrives. The self-talk follows: “There is never enough.” The thinking follows: “I need to cut everything.” The action follows: contraction. The life follows: more scarcity. Meet the scarcity feeling first, find the delight beneath it, and the whole chain changes.
In love, a feeling of being unseen fires when your partner looks at their phone. Self-talk, thinking, action. A whole evening shaped by one feeling. Meet it, and you respond from your heart.
In purpose, a feeling of not being ready fires every time your dream calls. Meet it with love, and you take the inspired step anyway.
In everyday moments, a feeling of overwhelm fires on a busy morning. Pause, breathe into your heart, let a small delight in. The whole day reshapes.
Patterns that replay usually begin with a feeling that has fired the same way for years. I call it Negative Energy Addiction, and you can learn more about loosening it in my teaching on how to break patterns in life and my guide on how to stop self sabotage.
A Practice to Start With What You Feel
This practice takes two minutes. Use it every time a strong feeling rises.
- Pause. The moment you notice a strong feeling, stop. Let the thoughts wait.
- Breathe into your heart. Place your hand on your heart and take three slow breaths into your heart field.
- Name the feeling. One or two words. “Hurt.” “Afraid.” “Ashamed.” “Angry.” Naming it lets it move.
- Honor it. Say inwardly: “I see you. You are welcome here.” Every feeling carries a message.
- Find the delight beneath. Ask your heart: “What do I truly desire right now?” Let the answer rise. Feel the delight in that desire.
- Let the new feeling lead. Now let your self-talk, your thinking and your next action flow from that delight.
Repeat this through the day. Each time you do, you train your heart to lead the sequence. Within a week, you notice a difference in how your days unfold.
What Changes When Your Heart Leads
When you begin to meet your feelings first, something beautiful happens. You stop being surprised by yourself.
You see the feeling rise. You recognize it. You know where it wants to take you, and you choose where you go instead. That choice is sovereignty. It is your power, back in your own hands.
Your relationships soften, because you respond from your heart. Your decisions clear, because they come from desire and delight. Your energy returns, because you are no longer spending it arguing with your own mind all day.
And your life begins to move faster. The gap between what you desire and what arrives shrinks, because the first link in the chain is finally aligned with what you want to create.
Have you ever had a day where you woke up delighted for no reason, and everything seemed to fall into place? That day began with a feeling. You can begin every day that way.
Thoughts Still Matter
Your thoughts are powerful. They shape your choices and give form to your desires. The ancient teaching of the Law of Mentalism honors the universe as living consciousness.
Thoughts simply come second in the sequence. When the feeling underneath is clear, your thoughts naturally follow it. You spend less energy correcting your mind and more energy living.
The Law of Cause and Effect shows the same truth from another angle. You are the cause. And the first cause in you is what you feel.
If you want to see this through the lens of heart science, my article on the heart and brain method walks through it. And to understand your authentic core signal, read about the Law of Resonance.
Questions You May Be Asking
Do feelings come before thoughts or after?
Feelings come first. A feeling fires, then your self-talk follows, then your thinking, then your actions. The thought is usually the story your mind writes to explain a feeling that already moved through you.
Can you change your feelings by changing your thoughts?
You can shift a feeling for a moment by changing a thought. Lasting change comes faster when you meet the feeling directly, honor it and return to the delight beneath it. Then your thoughts follow on their own.
What triggers a feeling before a thought?
Your heart responds to life instantly, often before your mind has words. Past experiences, old wounds and programming shape how a feeling fires. When those layers lift, delight becomes the feeling that fires first.
How do I control my emotions?
Meet them. Pause, breathe into your heart, name the feeling and honor it. A feeling that is met and welcomed moves through you, and you return to your center with clarity.
