If you want to change your life fast in 2027, I have one piece of advice, and it’s not a new morning routine or a vision board. Go volunteer. Seriously, go volunteer.
Volunteering is the fastest path to manifestation I know. The value you give comes back to you in ways you could never expect: the gifts, the ideas, the friendships, the opportunities, the community. I’ve watched it happen my whole life.
This is the written companion to my unscripted talk, Change Your Life Fast in 2027, on YouTube. It started as a reply to a question about how to get a seat on a nonprofit board.
The Shyest Kid in the Room
I started volunteering when I was nine years old, and I was a very shy little wallflower. I was involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind, 4-H and the Grange. I didn’t even understand the concept of volunteering. I just knew you show up, you do the work, and people respond in the most amazing ways.
One of the things we did as kids was visit retirement communities and adopt grandparents who had no grandchildren coming to see them. Some of the wisest lessons I ever heard came from those beautiful people when I was nine, ten, eleven years old.
By thirteen I was president of our local Guide Dogs for the Blind association. I served as treasurer, then vice president, then sat on the board of all three organizations I was part of. A shy, introverted kid. The mission mattered more than my insecurities, and it pulled me out into places I never thought I’d go.
Even in my rebel high school years, I rounded up thirty classmates to sing carols at retirement communities and adopt grandparents for the holidays, because I didn’t want those beautiful people to be left alone. It was one of the most valuable lessons I was ever taught: when you start creating community, community comes back to you full force.
Three Charities and Eight Boards Later
I’ve cofounded three charities and sat on the boards of eight or nine organizations, some paid, some unpaid. It never really mattered to me. What mattered was the vision, the mission and the reason the organization existed.
Every time I moved to a new community, the first thing I did was get involved with three different nonprofits, right off the bat. It’s the fastest way to meet people. No matter where I went, as long as I got involved, friends, connections and amazing opportunities followed.
And almost none of it is on social media. You won’t find pictures of me on stage at those events. To me, that’s something you give freely. When you don’t use service as a platform for yourself, people see your honor, your integrity and your truth. When you show up for people, people show up for you.

How to Get a Nonprofit Board Seat
- Find your three. Choose organizations that match your passion, your mission, your values and your moral compass.
- Do the humble work. Show up for the smallest, most overlooked tasks. Be dependable. Be reliable. Be the most active member you can be.
- Go above and beyond. Attend the events. Meet people. Introduce yourself and the organization everywhere you go. You never know which conversation turns into a donor, a sponsor or an invitation.
- Act as the face of the organization. No matter how small your volunteer role, you are now a representative. Show up like you’re critical to the long-term mission, because you are. People notice, and that is how board seats happen.
Practice: Your 2027 Challenge
- Sit with a notebook and your hand on your heart. Ask: “What do I care about so much that I’d show up for it for free?”
- Write down every cause that lights you up: animals, children, elders, the land, your town, women rising.
- Circle three, and find one local organization for each.
- Reach out to all three this week and ask how you can serve, at any level.
- After your first volunteer shift, write down one thing that delighted you and one person you met.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can volunteering really change your life?
Yes. Volunteering pulls you out of your comfort zone, connects you to community and opens doors to friendships and opportunities you could never plan for. The value you give comes back to you.
How do I get on a nonprofit board?
Choose organizations that match your values, do the humble work, show up reliably, introduce the organization everywhere you go, and act as its face at every level. Board seats grow from that kind of trust.
Can introverts be leaders in nonprofits?
Absolutely. I was a painfully shy kid and became a board president at thirteen. When the mission matters more than your insecurities, it carries you into leadership.
How is volunteering connected to manifestation?
Manifestation responds to what you give and how you show up. When you give value with delight, community, opportunities and support come back to you in ways you couldn’t have predicted.
Be delighted. 💋
