How to Have Fun Again as an Adult: Your Permission to Play

How to Have Fun Again as an Adult: Your Permission to Play

Remember when an afternoon could disappear into a game, a song or a cardboard box? Somewhere between deadlines and responsibilities, many of us lose that spark. If you are wondering how to have fun again as an adult, here is your official permission slip: play is essential, and your delight is waiting.

In Brief
How do I have fun again as an adult?
Remember what you loved as a child, choose one delight a day and approach it as play with zero goals. Dr. Isis Jade recommends fifteen minutes of pure play daily for seven days to reawaken your playful spirit.

This teaching comes from Secret Number Five in my book Seven Secrets to the Spontaneous Fulfillment of Your Heart’s Desires, where I give every reader permission to play, and from the opening chapters of The Law of Delight. In this guide you will learn why fun fades in adulthood, what play does for your life, my own story of rediscovering it, a client story about healing a joy wound, and a seven-day plan to bring fun back.

Why Do I Feel Like I Can’t Have Fun Anymore?

Most of us were rewarded for working hard, being disciplined, persevering and paying our dues. We learned that delighting ourselves belongs to children. Over time, fun starts to feel like something you have to earn, and play gets scheduled after everything else, which means it rarely happens.

Our culture adds pressure to perform, stress and the constant hum of struggle. Many people live so long in that hum that they forget what fun even feels like.

As children we were naturally gifted at following our feel-good voice. That voice is still inside you. It simply needs an invitation.

When Were You Last Truly Delighted?

Over the years I have worked with hundreds of clients, several of them highly successful and powerful. Nearly every one struggled to remember a moment when they were truly joyful, fully present and delighted. That can feel devastating to realize.

So start here. Think back over the past year and ask: when did I feel truly alive, joyful and delighted? Write down the date and the memory. Then look across your whole life for the moment of delight that stands out most, and remember everything about it: the impulse, the choice, the feeling, what followed.

Notice too whether delight ever got you in trouble. If you were shamed or punished for being “too much,” “silly” or “immature,” part of you may have decided that fun feels unsafe. Naming that belief is the first step to releasing it.

My Piano Story

At five, I heard a pianist play, and I fell in love with the music. I begged for lessons. By eleven, I dreaded every minute. For six years I practiced two to three hours a day so my parents got their money’s worth. My fingers ached, my wrists were rapped and I never once played a full piece just for fun. Sometimes I fell asleep at the bench. The instrument I loved became a symbol of torture.

At fifteen, a friend invited me to sing in her band “just because it’s fun.” She dragged me to a music store where a group of heavy metal musicians were jamming. One of them tossed me a guitar, showed me a few chords, and within half an hour I was jamming with his band, making the loudest, weirdest, most joyful sounds of my life.

“Hey, she’s pretty good!” one of them yelled over the noise. “Yeah, we are!” I grinned. After that I played in bands, learned bass and some drums, and sang. I wrote lyrics and my bandmates put chords to them. We never once called it practice. We called it jamming, and it was effortless.

Play Is Where Mastery Lives

Here is what that music store taught me: when you play, you lose yourself in delight, and delight is the most powerful creative force there is. Skills grow faster in play. Ideas flow freely. Your whole body relaxes and your joy comes forward.

So I give you permission to play, and to choose what lights you up today.

What Play Does for Your Life

  • It sparks epiphanies. Your best ideas arrive when your mind is relaxed and joyfully engaged.
  • It restores energy. Play discharges the stress of the day and refills you.
  • It deepens connection. Shared laughter bonds people faster than almost anything.
  • It opens you to receive. When you delight in life, you move into the creative state where your desires take form.
  • It makes you more yourself. Play reveals what you truly love, which points straight to your purpose.

A Client Story: Healing a Joy Wound

Mark came to me in his late thirties. He had a great job and still felt distant from everyone in his life. He believed something was wrong with him and that he could never succeed in relationships.

As we explored his history, a pattern surfaced: he had never been allowed to express joy around his parents. He carried what I call a joy wound. To avoid being shamed again, he kept everyone at a distance and surrounded himself with people who were angry and stuck, the way he used to be.

With me, Mark was funny, kind and quick to laugh. When I asked why he felt safe being himself with me, he said, “With you, it’s easy.” That was his epiphany. He wanted a life full of people who laughed and dreamed.

I asked him to list the qualities of his ideal people, then to cultivate those same qualities in himself. He began following his hobbies and passions, met new friends who uplifted him and eventually met a partner with whom laughter came easily. “I had no idea relationships could be this great,” he told me. His energy, health and passion for life all rose with his joy.

Signs You Have Forgotten How to Play

  • Your free time fills up with chores, errands and screens.
  • You feel guilty when you rest or do something just for fun.
  • You struggle to answer “What do you do for fun?”
  • Weekends feel like recovery time.
  • Laughter feels rare, and when it comes, it surprises you.
  • You turn every hobby into a project with goals and metrics.

If several of these sound familiar, your playful spirit is simply waiting for permission. Today you have it.

Bring Play Into Every Part of Your Life

Play at work

Fun at work sparks the ideas and collaboration that move everything forward. Turn a brainstorm into a game. Celebrate wins with your team every week. Notice the parts of your work you would do for free, and give them more of your time.

Play in love

Couples who play together laugh more and stay closer. Plan a surprise adventure, dance in the living room, revisit the playful things you did when you first met.

Play with family

Children are the world’s greatest play teachers. Follow their lead for an hour. Let them choose the game, and say yes to the silliness.

Play on your own

Solo play is a gift you give yourself. Take yourself on a date, start a creative project just for you or wander somewhere new with no plan at all.

Play and the Law of Delight

The Universe itself was created through play. In ancient teachings, creation is described as an act of cosmic play, the Universe joyfully expressing itself into existence and reveling in its own potential. When you play, you align with that same creative force. This is why enlightened sages so often laugh: they have discovered the delightful joke at the heart of life. Every time you play, you step into that joke with them.

How to Have Fun Again as an Adult

Remember what you loved as a child

Bubbles, blocks, dress-up, dancing to silly music, jump rope, bike rides, swinging, making discoveries. For me it was swinging and dancing. Your childhood delights are a map to your adult fun.

Jam it out

Pick something you love and approach it as play. Sing badly in the car. Paint with your fingers. Dance in the kitchen. Let it be messy and joyful.

Choose one delight a day

Fun grows from tiny moments. One song, one walk somewhere new, one silly game with someone you love. Small delights stack quickly.

Invite a friend who plays

My friend changed my life by inviting me to a jam. Spend time with people who laugh easily and say yes to adventure.

Give yourself ten minutes a day

In The Law of Delight I ask readers to take ten minutes every day simply to play and have fun. Stomp in rain puddles. Blow bubbles. Ten minutes is enough to remind your body what joy feels like.

Fun Ideas for Adults, by Mood

  • Move: dance class, roller skating, swinging at a park, hiking somewhere new, swimming.
  • Create: painting, pottery, writing silly songs, cooking a new recipe, making a collage.
  • Explore: a new neighborhood, a museum, a day trip, a food you have never tried.
  • Connect: game nights, karaoke, a jam session, a picnic, a class with a friend.
  • Be silly: blow bubbles, play tag with kids, make a blanket fort, wear something outrageous.

Is It Common to Have No Friends as an Adult?

Many adults find their circles shrink after school, moves, marriages or career changes. You are far from alone. Play is one of the most natural ways to meet people: join a class, a club, a choir or a team centered on something that delights you. Shared delight creates friendship faster than small talk ever could.

Practice One: Exploring Your Source of Delight

From The Law of Delight:

  1. Write down five moments when you felt completely joyful, with no need for anyone else’s approval.
  2. Find the common threads. Do they share creativity, connection, freedom, nature, movement or something else?
  3. Ask how you can bring more of these moments into your life every week, and write three ideas.

Practice Two: The Seven-Day Play Prescription

  1. Write your childhood delight list. Ten things you loved before age twelve.
  2. Circle three you could do this week in some grown-up or simple form.
  3. Schedule fifteen minutes of play each day for seven days, at the same time each day.
  4. Play with zero goals. No improving, no measuring, no posting. Just delight.
  5. End each session with one sentence in a journal: “Today I delighted in…”
  6. On day seven, notice how your energy, creativity and mood have shifted.

What Can I Do to Start Enjoying Life Again?

Start with one delight, today. Enjoyment returns through small, repeated moments of play and presence. Each one reminds your body that life is meant to be enjoyed, and soon you find yourself reaching for delight naturally.

Each evening, write three things you appreciated about your day and how each one made you feel. Appreciation amplifies joy and trains your attention to notice the good that is already here.

Why do I feel like I can’t have fun anymore?

What can I do to start enjoying life again?

Begin with one small delight today, such as a song, a walk somewhere new or a silly game, and give it your full attention. Repeat daily. Enjoyment grows through these small moments.

Is play important for adults?

Yes. Play returns you to delight, and delight is the most powerful creative force there is. Adults who play feel more alive and more creative, and they often find their skills grow faster than through strict practice.
