One comment ruins your day. One message sends your heart racing. One memory pulls you under for hours. If your emotions seem to run your life, you are far from alone, and you hold far more power than you realize. Learning how to master your emotions means becoming the source of your own inner state, so your environment stops controlling you and you start creating your life from within.
This teaching comes from the chapters “Who Are You Really?” and “Beliefs Opposing Your Wellbeing” in my book Manifest Your Dreams, and from The Law of Delight. In this guide you will learn what emotional mastery truly means, what your emotions are telling you, why we reach for distractions, how emotions shape your results, two client stories, seven ways to master your emotions and practices to become a source to yourself.
What Is Emotional Mastery?
True emotional mastery is being the emotional source to yourself. It means you can return to peace, steadiness and delight from within, whatever is happening around you.
Mastery never means suppressing what you feel. Every emotion is welcome. Mastery means you feel fully, understand what the feeling is telling you and choose your next state consciously. Without becoming this source to yourself, your environment will always trigger you and steer you. With it, you begin creating your own evolution.
What Your Emotions Are Telling You
Your subconscious mind communicates with you through feelings. Your emotional state on any topic shows you what your subconscious programming holds about that topic. That is powerful information.
- Fear points to a belief that something is unsafe.
- Anger often points to a boundary that has been crossed.
- Sadness points to something you love or have lost.
- Anxiety often points to imagined futures.
- Heaviness often points to beliefs ready for release.
- Delight points straight to your soul’s truth.
Unhealed parts of you communicate through sensations: triggers, anxiety, disappointment. When you listen to them with curiosity, they show you exactly where healing wants to happen.
Why We Reach for Distractions
When an uncomfortable feeling rises, most of us instantly reach for something outside ourselves: a drive, a phone call, a snack, a drink, a cigarette, a game, a show, even a happy song to cheer ourselves up.
Even pleasant props like music are still outer distractions used to manage your state. As long as you rely on something outside of you to change how you feel, you remain a product of your environment. Your mood depends on what happens around you.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying music or a walk. The shift is in why you reach for them. Mastery is knowing you can return to peace from within, and choosing outer delights as celebrations of your state.
How Your Emotions Shape Your Results
Your emotional state on any topic reflects your subconscious programming on that topic, and that programming shapes the results you experience. If you feel fear and lack around money, money tends to feel scarce. If you feel delight and trust around love, love tends to flow.
You cannot fake it. You can tell everyone you are confident while fear screams inside, and the inner state keeps showing up in your life. The good news is that you hold the power, right now, to shift your emotional state through a little inner work, and your outer reality follows.
Emotional Intelligence and Belief Systems
Belief systems speak the language of emotion. They are thoughts and feelings you have repeated so often that they became your way of operating. Logic alone rarely reaches them. You recognize them through inner reflection, and you change them by working with the feelings underneath.
This is why emotional intelligence is the doorway to changing your life. As you learn to read your emotions, you start to see the beliefs beneath them, and as those beliefs shift, everything else shifts too.
A Client Story: Turning Stress Into Joy
My client David felt burned out, irritated and drained at work. His emotions ran his days. I asked him which parts of his work used to bring him joy. He loved problem-solving and collaborating with his team.
So he began each day focusing there. He handed reports he disliked to a teammate who loved them, and he reframed his management role as a chance to mentor and celebrate his team. Within a few weeks his stress dropped and his energy surged. He mastered his emotions by changing where his attention lived.
A Client Story: One Delight a Day
Another client, Samantha, came to me in the middle of a painful divorce, feeling lost in a fog of heartache. I asked her to keep a joy-filled appreciation diary for one week, writing only the small moments she appreciated and enjoyed. Those moments became her lifeline. Her resilience grew, her clarity returned, and she found the courage to have a conversation that turned a painful divorce into a peaceful co-parenting friendship.
The Negative Emotional Energy Loop
Many people are caught in what I call the Negative Emotional Energy Loop: a cycle that cultivates drama, conflict, chaos and pain. Strong emotions release a rush of chemistry in the body, and over time the body can come to crave that familiar intensity, even when it hurts.
This is why the same arguments, worries and disappointments keep returning. Part of you has learned to reach for them. Emotional mastery begins when you notice the loop with compassion and choose, one moment at a time, to step out of it. Read the full teaching in addicted to negativity.
Emotional Habits Are Practiced
Everyday worry, dread and irritation are practices. Each time you rehearse them, they grow stronger, and you become very skilled at feeling them. The same is true of joy, appreciation and calm. Whatever you practice most becomes your emotional home.
This is empowering. It means your emotional life is trainable. Choose the states you want to live in and practice them daily, the way you would practice an instrument. Within weeks, they begin to arrive on their own.
Your Ego Is on Your Side
A hurting ego can make emotions feel overwhelming. It replays old pain because it believes it is protecting you. Underneath, it is asking your Inner Divine Self to release that pain so it can return to its true role: following and balancing your soul essence.
When you meet your strongest emotions with tenderness, you are partnering with your ego to heal. A healthy ego feels vibrant, confident and in charge, and it follows your soul. Learn more about the healthy ego vs unhealthy ego.
Seven Ways to Master Your Emotions
1. Pause before you react
When a strong feeling rises, take three slow breaths before you speak or act. That pause is where your power lives.
2. Name the feeling
Say it out loud or write it down: “I feel angry,” “I feel afraid.” Naming a feeling softens its grip.
3. Feel it in your body
Locate the sensation and breathe into it. Let it move through you. Feelings that are fully felt pass far more quickly.
4. Ask what it is telling you
Every emotion carries a message. Ask: what is this feeling pointing to? What do I need?
5. Trace it to the belief
Ask where you learned this response. Often a strong reaction today echoes an old experience.
6. Choose your next state
Once you have felt and understood the emotion, choose how you want to feel next. Reach for one delight and let it shift you.
7. Practice being with yourself
Regular time alone without distractions expands your capacity to hold any feeling. The practice below shows you how.
How Do You Let Go of Things Out of Your Control?
Some forces are bigger than any one of us. You did not cause the storm. What you hold is the power to choose your response. Name what is outside your control, write it down and release it with a breath. Then name what is within your control, your response, your choices and your next step, and give your energy there.
How to Master Your Emotions in Public
When emotions rise in public, use your breath quietly: in for four counts, out for six. Feel your feet on the floor. Place a hand on your chest if you can. Give yourself permission to step away for a moment. Then, when you are alone, let yourself feel what you held so it can move through.
Emotional Mastery in Relationships
Relationships are where emotions run strongest. When someone you love triggers you, pause and ask: is this reaction about this moment, or about something older? Speak from your feelings with “I feel” language, and listen to understand. When both people take responsibility for their own emotional state, conflict softens and connection deepens. Samantha’s story shows how one person’s shift can transform a whole relationship.
Signs Your Emotional Mastery Is Growing
- You notice a feeling before it takes over.
- You recover from upsets more quickly.
- Old triggers lose their charge.
- You can sit with discomfort without reaching for a distraction.
- You choose your words more consciously in heated moments.
- Delight returns more easily after a hard day.
Emotional Mastery and the Law of Delight
Delight is your true core vibration and the most powerful creative force there is. When you can return to delight from within, you become your own source of joy. That is the heart of emotional mastery. Each time you choose one small delight in a hard moment, you strengthen the inner muscle that keeps you steady, creative and free.
A Third Story: Mark Let His Walls Down
My client Mark had raised emotional walls so high that he felt distant from everyone in his life. He surrounded himself with people who were angry and stuck.
With me, though, he was funny, kind and quick to laugh. When I asked why, he said, “With you, it’s easy.” That moment showed him that his warmth had been there all along, hidden behind protection. He began to cultivate those qualities, follow his passions and let himself feel. As he became a steadier source of warmth for himself, his relationships transformed.
A Daily Rhythm for Emotional Mastery
Morning
Before you reach for your phone, place a hand on your heart and ask, “How do I want to feel today?” Choose one word, such as calm, joyful or brave, and feel it for one minute.
Midday
Pause for three slow breaths and check in: “What am I feeling right now?” Name it without judgment and return to your chosen feeling.
Evening
Write three moments you appreciated and one emotion you handled well. Celebrate your progress, however small.
Practice One: Meeting Yourself Without Distraction
From Manifest Your Dreams:
- Sit quietly for at least half an hour with no noise, phone, music or interruptions.
- Bring your attention to simply being in this moment and feeling.
- Notice every emotion and memory that rises without judging it.
- Notice any urge to escape into future plans or distractions, and gently return.
- Afterward, write down what came up.
- Notice the urge to self-medicate afterward, and pause a little longer before reaching for anything.
This practice reveals your current level of emotional mastery and strengthens it every time.

Practice Two: The Joy Reset
From The Law of Delight:
- Take a deep breath and close your eyes.
- Think of something that brings you immediate joy, simple and close at hand.
- Let that feeling fill your awareness and notice how your energy shifts.
- Return to your day and notice what new insight arrives.
Practice Three: The Evening Appreciation
Each night, write three moments you appreciated today and how each one made you feel. Appreciation amplifies joy and trains your attention to notice what is good.
Practice Four: The Trigger Tracker
- For one week, write down every moment you feel strongly triggered.
- Note what happened, what you felt, where you felt it in your body and how you responded.
- At the end of the week, look for patterns: the same people, situations or times of day.
- For your most common trigger, ask what old experience it echoes.
- Write one new response you will practice next time, such as a breath, a pause or a kind phrase to yourself.
- Practice it, and record how it went.
Common Mistakes on the Path to Emotional Mastery
- Suppressing feelings. Pushed-down emotions return louder. Feel them fully, then choose.
- Judging yourself for feeling. Every emotion is information. Meet yours with curiosity.
- Waiting for others to change. No one outside you can change your inner state. That power is yours.
- Relying only on distractions. Distractions soothe for a moment and leave the pattern untouched.
- Expecting perfection. Mastery is a practice. Each recovery counts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I master my emotions?
Pause before reacting, name the feeling, feel it in your body, ask what it is telling you, trace it to the belief, choose your next state and practice being with yourself. Dr. Isis Jade teaches that true emotional mastery is becoming the emotional source to yourself.
What are the seven ways to master emotions?
Pause, name, feel, ask, trace, choose and practice: pause before reacting, name the feeling, feel it in your body, ask what it is telling you, trace it to its belief, choose your next state and spend regular undistracted time with yourself.
Does mastering emotions mean suppressing them?
No. Mastery welcomes every emotion. You feel fully, understand the message and then choose your next state consciously.
How do you let go of things out of your control?
Name what is outside your control and release it with a breath, then give your energy to what is within your control: your response, your choices and your next step.
How do I stop letting my emotions control me?
Practice the pause, become curious about your triggers and spend time with yourself without distractions. As you become the source of your own state, outer events lose their power to steer you.
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand and work with your emotions and the emotions of others. Dr. Isis Jade teaches that it is the doorway to seeing and changing the beliefs beneath your feelings.
Why do I feel my emotions so intensely?
Many people feel deeply, and intensity often increases when old pain is unhealed or when the body is used to emotional intensity. Daily grounding, naming your feelings and gentle inner work can soften intensity over time. If emotions feel overwhelming, a licensed professional can offer support.
How long does it take to master your emotions?
Many people notice changes within a few weeks of daily practice, and mastery deepens over a lifetime. Each time you pause, name and choose, you strengthen your capacity.
What is the fastest way to calm down?
Slow your breath, with a long exhale, and feel your feet on the ground. Place a hand on your chest and name what you feel. Then think of one thing that brings you joy.
Is emotional mastery the same as emotional intelligence?
They are closely linked. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand emotions. Emotional mastery is using that understanding to become the source of your own steady, joyful state.
