Underneath the roles you play, the expectations you carry and the noise of the day, there is a you that has always been whole. Wise. Radiant. Delighted. Learning how to connect with your true self is how you come home to that you, and from there, everything you desire begins to flow.
This teaching comes from the chapters “Being With Your True Self” and “Who Are You Really?” in my book Manifest Your Dreams, and from The Law of Delight, where I teach that your core resonance is as unique as a snowflake. In this guide you will learn what your true self is, what separates you from it, how to tell your true self from your false self, how to fall in love with yourself first, a client story, the signs you are connected, and practices to meet the real you.
What Is Your True Self?
Your true self is who you are at the soul level, your Inner Divine Self. It knows its fullness and its unlimited power. It knows it is infinite. When you live through your Inner Divine Self, you know you already have what you desire, and you can feel it, know it and live it even before it arrives.
Your Inner Divine Self speaks like this: “I am Divine. I am Divine Love. Divine Light. Divinely guided. I am DELIGHT. I am a Creator. I feel whole, full and content right now, and I am eager for more.”
Your true self is delighted right now and holds a true and abiding peace. It has simply been disconnected from you for a while.
Is Your True Self the Same as Your Higher Self?
People use many names: true self, higher self, authentic self, soul, Inner Divine Self, I Am presence. Each tradition draws the lines a little differently. In my teaching, they all point to the same essence: the part of you that is whole, wise and connected to Source. Use whichever name feels most alive to you. The connection matters far more than the label.
What Separates You From Your True Self?
The separation between you and your soul is made of pain bodies and distortions that simply need clearing, like cobwebs and dust. They form from:
- Unhealed pain that your ego carries to protect you.
- Belief systems you absorbed from family, school and culture.
- Constant distraction that keeps you from ever sitting with yourself.
- Living outside in, chasing outer things to fill an inner feeling.
- Self-judgment: blaming, shaming, shoulding and guilting yourself.
Your True Self and Your False Self
In extreme cases, the ego becomes so consumed with pain that a false identity forms, and we begin to believe it is who we are. Life then becomes an exercise in disconnection from the soul. We forget who we truly are because we are invested in the illusion of the false self, a pain body wrapped around our energy field like a shield against the dangers “out there.”
Your false self speaks in lack: “Show me the goods and then I’ll believe.” It loves conditionally and creates conditionally, and whatever it creates never feels like enough. Your true self speaks in fullness. It feels content now and eager for more. Learning to recognize these two voices is the first step home.
Fall in Love With Yourself First
Inner contentment is the beginning of the smooth waters you need for realignment. It is a deep sense of inner peace. And when you fall in total, unconditional love and delight with yourself, releasing the blaming, shaming, shoulding and guilting, that state dissolves the unnecessary pain bodies in an instant. Your inner radiance and natural core power shine through like a beacon.
A person fully in true love and delight with themselves is utterly magnetic, potent and indescribably desirable, to the Universe and to everyone in it. So your number one job is to sit with yourself, delight in the magic of your soul and fall head over heels in love with yourself first. Explore more in how to love yourself more.
Your Mind Follows Your Focus
Nothing opposes beingness. The mind follows your focus. When your focus rests on lack, your mind organizes your life around lack. When your focus rests on the truth that you are already abundant, abundance becomes the result.
The mind loves to follow a leader. Put your soul back in the driver’s seat, and your mind settles into its natural place as a cooperative, collaborative partner. The sooner you allow this, the more powerful you become.
Your Core Resonance Is Uniquely Yours
In The Law of Delight I teach that your core resonance is your energetic thumbprint, as unique as a snowflake. What delights you may differ completely from what delights me, and that is ideal. Connecting with your true self means tuning into your own delight, free of anyone else’s definition. Your dreams and desires reflect what resonates with you at the soul level, so they are some of the clearest messages your true self sends.
Healed Parts and Unhealed Parts
Within each of us live healed parts and unhealed parts. Healed parts feel wonderful. They harmonize with your soul and with everything you wish to create. Unhealed parts are fearful and painful beliefs your mind carries about yourself, life and other people.
Think of unhealed parts like worn parts in a car that start whining and making strange noises. The car still runs, and it acts up. Unhealed parts work the same way: they create distortion in your energy field, and they communicate through triggers, anxiety, disappointment and heaviness.
You are never broken or unworthy. These parts are simply distortions waiting to be cleared and reintegrated. Underneath them, you are always whole. And here is the beautiful news: everything you need to change lives right inside you. There is no need to fix the whole world. Your true self is right under your nose.
How to Hear Your True Self’s Voice
Your true self speaks through feeling. In Manifest Your Dreams I share a simple test. Write two lists:
- What you no longer want: for example, dishonesty, betrayal, chaos, being unseen.
- What you truly desire: for example, integrity, support, honor, emotional honesty, reverence, genuine love and loyalty.
Now read each list slowly and feel it in your body. The first list feels vile. The second feels glorious, even giddy. That glorious feeling is your soul’s truth speaking. What is real for you feels great. What is false for you feels repellent. Your feelings are the most reliable map back to yourself.
Then take one more step: find those desired qualities within yourself first and delight in them. That is how your true self becomes visible to you, and to the world.
Your Dreams Reveal Your True Self
Your dreams and desires are clues. They reflect what resonates with you at the soul level. When a desire makes your heart leap, pay attention. It is pointing toward who you came here to be. Many people dismiss their deepest desires as unrealistic. In my teaching, they are some of the clearest messages your true self ever sends. Explore this further in how to know what you really want.
A Client Story: Being Himself Felt Easy
My client Mark felt distant from everyone in his life. He kept walls up and surrounded himself with people who were angry and stuck. With me, though, he was funny, kind and quick to laugh. When I asked why he felt free to be himself with me, he said, “With you, it’s easy.”
That was his epiphany. His true self had been there all along, waiting for a safe place to come out. He began cultivating the qualities he loved in himself, followed his passions and met people who welcomed the real him. His relationships, energy and joy transformed. Connecting with his true self changed everything around him.
Why Distraction Keeps You From Yourself
Most of us reach for something the moment we feel uncomfortable: a drive, a call, a snack, a drink, a game, a show, even a happy song to cheer ourselves up. These props manage our mood from the outside. They also keep us from ever meeting ourselves.
True emotional mastery is becoming the source of your own state. When you can sit with yourself and return to peace and delight from within, your environment stops controlling you, and you begin creating your own evolution. Learn more in my guide to mastering your emotions.
Your True Self in Everyday Life
In relationships
When you show up as your true self, you attract people who love the real you. Speak honestly, laugh freely and let people see what delights you.
At work
Your true self has gifts it longs to express. Notice the tasks that make you lose track of time and the moments when people say “you’re so good at this.” Those are clues to your soul’s work.
In your choices
Before a decision, pause and ask, “What would my true self choose?” Then notice which option feels light and expansive in your body.
A Second Story: Claire Followed Her Delight
When my client Claire and I explored what truly delighted her, three things came forward: creating products, sharing new ideas and connecting with people.
She began giving her time and energy to them. She shared her ideas openly, created what excited her and connected with people she loved serving. Within about four months, her business took off, and opportunities multiplied in directions she never expected. Living as her true self became her greatest business strategy.
Why It Can Feel Hard to Be Your True Self
- Old conditioning: you were praised for being good, quiet or useful, and learned to hide the rest.
- Fear of judgment: showing your real self feels risky when you were judged before. Read about fear of being judged.
- Belonging: part of you worries that being yourself means losing people you love.
- Habit: after years of playing a role, the role can feel like you.
Each of these softens with gentle practice. The more you show up as yourself in small, safe ways, the more natural it becomes.
How to Connect With Your True Self
Spend time with yourself, undistracted
Meeting yourself without distractions is the most direct path home. The practice below shows you how.
Notice what delights you
Your delights are messages from your soul. Write down what lights you up each day and follow those threads.
Release the borrowed expectations
Many of the “shoulds” you carry came from someone else. Ask of each one: does this delight me? Keep what does and release the rest.
Speak to yourself with love
Replace self-judgment with tenderness. Speak to yourself as you would to someone you adore.
Listen to your body
What is real for you feels great in your body. What is false for you feels repellent. Your feelings are the language your true self speaks.
Turn your life inside out
Become the inner state you are seeking, whole, loved and content, and let outer things become an extension of you.
How Do I See My True Self?
You see your true self most clearly in moments of delight, stillness and honesty: when you lose track of time doing what you love, when you sit quietly and feel peace rise, and when you speak your truth without fear. Look for those moments and notice who you are in them. That is you.
Signs You Are Connected to Your True Self
- You feel content and whole, even before outer things change.
- Your choices feel clear and light.
- You speak kindly to yourself.
- You enjoy your own company.
- Other people’s opinions lose their grip on you.
- Delight shows up easily and often.
Practice One: Who Are You Really?
From Manifest Your Dreams:
- Sit down, close your eyes and remove every distraction: no noise, no music, no phone.
- Spend at least half an hour simply being in this moment and feeling.
- Notice what your mind brings up: memories, worries, plans, restlessness.
- Gently return to now each time. You are meeting the real you, as you are right now.
- Afterward, write down what came up. Note what pulled you to the past and what pulled you into the future.
- Notice any urge to distract yourself afterward with food, screens, calls or even music. Pause and stay with yourself a little longer.
This exercise can feel surprising at first. It shows you exactly where your connection needs tending, and it strengthens with every practice.

Practice Two: The Inner Divine Self Invocation
- Stand tall with both hands over your heart.
- Breathe slowly three times and feel your heartbeat.
- Speak aloud, with full feeling: “I am Divine. I am Divine Love and Divine Light. I am divinely guided. I am DELIGHT. I am a Creator. I feel whole, full and content right now.”
- Stay with the feeling for one minute.
- Ask your true self one question, such as “What would delight me today?” and listen.
- Act on the answer within the day.
Practice Three: The Two Lists
- Draw a line down the center of a page.
- On the left, write what you no longer want in one area of life, such as love, work or friendship.
- On the right, write what you truly desire in that same area.
- Read the left list slowly and notice how your body feels. Then read the right list and notice again.
- Circle three qualities on the right that feel most glorious.
- For each, write one way you already embody it, and one way you can express it more this week.
- Tear up or burn the left side as a symbol of release.
Practice Four: The Daily Delight Inventory
Each evening for seven days, write down three moments when you felt most like yourself and what you were doing. At the end of the week, look for patterns. The people, activities and places that appear again and again are showing you your true self in action. Give more of your life to them.

Look for the moments when you feel most alive, peaceful and honest. Your true self shows up in delight and stillness. Sitting quietly without distractions for half an hour reveals who you are right now.
How do you truly connect with yourself?
Make time to be alone with yourself without screens or noise, let yourself feel, and treat yourself with tenderness. Regular practice deepens the connection.
Is the true self the same as the higher self?
Different traditions use different terms. In Dr. Isis Jade’s teaching, true self, higher self and Inner Divine Self all point to the same essence: the part of you that is whole, wise and connected to Source.
How can I tell if I’m self-aware?
You notice your patterns and triggers as they happen, you can name your feelings, you take responsibility for your choices and you are curious about yourself. Self-awareness grows with every moment of honest reflection.
What blocks your true self?
Unhealed pain, absorbed beliefs, constant distraction, self-judgment and the habit of chasing outer things to fill an inner feeling. Each can be released.
What is the difference between your true self and your ego?
In Dr. Isis Jade’s teaching, your true self is your soul essence, and your ego is the part of you that manifests that essence in the world. A healthy ego follows and balances your true self. A hurting ego, carrying pain, can create a false identity that feels like you.
Why is it hard to be my true self?
Old conditioning, fear of judgment, worry about belonging and years of playing a role can all make it feel risky. Small, safe steps of self-expression make it easier over time.
How do I communicate with my higher self?
Create stillness, place a hand on your heart, ask a clear question and listen for the calm, quiet response that follows. Journaling and noticing what delights you are also powerful ways to hear your higher self.
Can you lose your true self?
Your true self is never lost. It can be covered by pain, conditioning and distraction, and it is always there to return to.
