How to Listen to Your Heart: Let Your Soul Lead and Your Mind Follow

How to Listen to Your Heart: Let Your Soul Lead and Your Mind Follow

“Follow your heart.” It is some of the oldest advice in the world, and some of the hardest to act on. Your mind is loud, full of reasons, warnings and to-do lists. Your heart speaks quietly. Learning how to listen to your heart means turning down the volume of your thoughts and tuning into the deeper knowing that has been guiding you all along.

In Brief
How do you listen to your heart?
Slow down, place a hand on your chest, breathe into your heart and ask a simple question. Notice the first quiet word, image or feeling. Dr. Isis Jade teaches that changing what you listen to, your heart in place of your busy mind, changes your entire life.

This teaching comes from Part Two of my book Your Mission I’mPossible, “Letting Go of Mind and Listening to Your Heart and Soul.” In this guide you will learn why the heart has been honored as the seat of the soul for thousands of years, how the mind tries to protect the heart, the difference between a feeling and a passing emotion, how to tell your heart’s voice from your mind’s, and practices to hear your heart clearly every day.

What Does It Mean to Listen to Your Heart?

Listening to your heart means making choices from your deepest knowing, the place where love, truth and your soul’s desires live. In my teaching, your heart is the seat of your soul and your inner guidance, your connection to Infinite Intelligence. Your mind is a brilliant processor. Your heart is the one who knows what you truly want.

In Your Mission I’mPossible I write that to change your life, you only need to change what you listen to. Changing your mind is really hard. Listening to your heart is simple.

The Heart in Our Language and History

Our language has always known the heart is more than a pump. We say heartfelt, from the bottom of my heart, with all my heart, heartsick, heavy-hearted, lighthearted, our hearts are joined as one. We say the heart has its reasons that reason cannot comprehend.

The ancient Egyptians believed the heart, more than the brain, was the seat of a person’s being and intelligence. During preservation, they carefully removed other organs and left the heart in place, honoring it as the center of the self. Across cultures and centuries, the heart has been revered as the home of the soul.

The Heart Came First

Here is something beautiful to consider. Shortly after conception, the cells that will become your heart begin to pulse, long before ears develop and long before thought. Your earliest experience of life was rhythm and feeling, your heartbeat alongside your mother’s. In my teaching, your very first perceptions were heartfelt feeling, the language your heart still speaks.

Feeling and Emotion

In my book I make a distinction between pure feeling and passing emotion. Emotions often arise from the mind’s reactions: a surge of happiness when something goes our way, a flash of anger when it doesn’t. Pure feeling comes from the heart. It is the deep, steady warmth of true love, peace and delight.

When you feel an overwhelming flow of pure love for someone, like your child, there is an opening and warming across your whole chest. No amount of thinking can create that feeling. You have to go beyond thought to experience it. That opening is your heart speaking.

How Your Mind Tries to Protect Your Heart

The first time our hearts are hurt, usually early in life and usually unintentionally by caregivers, the mind takes action. It studies the hurt and creates protection programs to shield your heart from future pain. These were meant to be temporary emergency programs, holding things together while you regained your strength.

Over time, with so many hurts and so much noise, the mind keeps running those programs and stays in the driver’s seat. It creates a false identity, a shell, to run your life. Your heart never leaves, though. It is always there, waiting for you to listen again.

This is why listening to your heart can feel unfamiliar. It is less a new skill and more a homecoming.

Your Mind Is a Partner

Your mind is a monumental processor, designed to carry out your heart’s desires. Without a connection to your heart, though, your mind has no clue what you truly want. So it runs replicated program after program, and you sit there wondering, “Why do I keep doing this?”

When your heart leads and your mind follows, everything flows. Your heart gives direction. Your mind finds the way. Together they co-create your life.

How to Figure Out What Your Heart Wants

Notice what opens you

When you imagine a choice, does your chest open and warm, or tighten? What is true for you tends to feel expansive.

Notice what you long for

Longing is your heart’s voice. What do you keep daydreaming about? Follow your daydreams. They know where they are going.

Notice what moves you to tears

Tears of relief, joy or tenderness often reveal what matters most to your heart.

Notice what delights you

Delight is your heart’s yes. The things that make you light up are pointing you somewhere.

Notice your first impression of people

When you meet someone, you often get an immediate sense of them before you know anything about them. That first read often comes from the heart. Pay attention to it.

How to Listen to Your Heart and Not Your Mind

Your mind speaks in “shoulds,” worries and long explanations. Your heart speaks in simple knowing, longing and warmth. Your mind looks for proof first. Your heart already knows.

When you notice your mind racing, pause. Place a hand on your chest. Breathe slowly into your heart for a minute. Then ask your question again, and notice the first quiet response. It is usually your heart.

Your Heart Lives for Action

Your heart is an action-organ. It doesn’t think, it does. When you truly follow your heart, action flows naturally. Dreams written down from the heart begin to move from feeling into form. That is why every heart-listening practice ends with one small step.

Signs You Are Living From Your Heart

In Your Mission I’mPossible I write that when you live in anger, fear, anxiety and frustration, you are living from your mind. When you live from love, with honor and a great commitment to make things happen, you are living from your heart. Here are some signs your heart is leading:

  • You feel connected to the people around you.
  • Decisions feel clear, even when they are brave.
  • You act from love more often than from fear.
  • You feel a quiet sense of rightness in your choices.
  • Your days carry more delight and meaning.
  • You trust that you will find your way.

Listening to Your Heart in Everyday Life

In love

Notice how your heart feels around a person: open and warm, or tight and guarded. Your heart often knows who is right for you long before your mind has the facts. Honor what it tells you, and give it time to speak clearly.

At work

Notice which tasks, people and projects make your heart feel alive. Give more of your energy there. When a career decision arises, ask your heart before you make the spreadsheet.

In big decisions

Before a move, a commitment or a major purchase, sit with your heart for a few days. Notice which option your heart keeps returning to when your mind is quiet.

In daily choices

Practice with small things: what to eat, which route to take, whether to say yes to an invitation. Small choices train your ear for the big ones.

Your Heart Holds Your Purpose

Your heart determines your soul purpose. In my book I invite readers to free-write with a hand on the heart, beginning with the words: “I allow my heart to speak purely on this page, without interpretation from my tiny mind. This is what I am being told I am really here for…” Many people are surprised by what flows. Sometimes the heart even chooses different handwriting, or speaks in pictures. Whatever arrives is sacred and perfect. Explore how to find your purpose in life.

Practice One: The Heart Breath

  1. Sit comfortably and place one or both hands over your heart.
  2. Feel your heartbeat or the warmth of your hands.
  3. Breathe slowly, imagining each breath flowing in and out through your heart.
  4. Bring to mind someone or something you love completely. Let that feeling fill your chest.
  5. Ask your heart one question, such as “What do you want me to know?”
  6. Listen for the first word, image or feeling. Write it down.

Practice Two: The Door to Your Heart’s Dream

From Your Mission I’mPossible:

  1. Close your eyes, breathe deeply into your center and focus on your heartbeat. Feel your pulse at your wrist, your neck or your chest.
  2. Imagine a door in front of you. Notice every detail: its material, its handle, the steps leading up to it.
  3. Walk up to the door and take hold of the handle.
  4. Know that on the other side, your heart has something waiting for you: its vision for your life.
  5. Open the door and see what is there.
  6. When you return, write down everything you saw and felt.

Practice Three: The Heart and Head Check

  1. Write a decision you are facing.
  2. Draw two columns: “My mind says” and “My heart says.”
  3. Fill in the mind column first with every reason, fear and should.
  4. Place a hand on your heart, breathe and fill in the heart column with what you feel and long for.
  5. Read both. Notice which column brings relief, warmth or excitement.
  6. Take one small step in the direction your heart chose.

What Blocks Your Heart’s Voice

  • Constant noise: screens, schedules and chatter leave no space to hear.
  • Old hurts: protection programs keep the heart guarded.
  • Others’ opinions: the louder other voices are, the quieter your own seems.
  • Rushing: your heart speaks at the pace of breath, never at the pace of panic.
  • Self-doubt: believing you can’t trust yourself keeps you from listening.

Each block softens with stillness, compassion and small acts of trust.

A Daily Heart Rhythm

Morning

Before you reach for your phone, place your hands on your heart and ask, “What do you want for me today?” Write one line.

Midday

Pause for one minute of heart breathing. Ask, “Am I living from my heart or my mind right now?”

Evening

Write one moment today when you followed your heart, and how it felt. Celebrate it. Each celebration strengthens your trust.

When Following Your Heart Feels Scary

Your heart may ask you to do brave things: leave a job, start something new, speak a truth, love again. Your mind may flood you with fear. That fear is often your old protection programs doing their job. Thank them, breathe and take one small step. Your heart rarely asks you to leap blindly. It usually asks for the next step. Learn to tell fear from guidance in intuition or fear.

Common Mistakes When Trying to Listen to Your Heart

  • Confusing a passing emotion with your heart. Heart guidance is steady and returns calmly.
  • Asking when you are rushed. Your heart speaks in stillness.
  • Waiting for proof. Your heart knows before the evidence arrives.
  • Ignoring the small nudges. Following small nudges strengthens trust for big ones.
  • Listening, then not acting. Your heart lives for action. Take one step.

Practice Four: The Heart Letter

  1. Find a quiet moment and place your hand on your heart.
  2. Breathe slowly until you feel settled.
  3. Write a letter from your heart to you, beginning “Dear one, here is what I want you to know…”
  4. Let the words flow without stopping to edit. Your heart may speak in images, memories or simple phrases.
  5. When you finish, read the letter aloud.
  6. Underline one sentence that moves you most and keep it somewhere visible this week.

Many people are surprised by the tenderness and clarity that pour out. Your heart has been waiting a long time to be asked.

A Story of Listening to the Heart

In Your Mission I’mPossible I share the story of my client Joy, who believed she didn’t know what she really wanted. Her mind was full of worries, obligations and other people’s expectations. When we slowed down and listened beneath all of that, her heart spoke clearly: she longed to create art and to lead an organization serving children. Her heart had known for twenty-two years. It simply had not been heard.

That is often how it works. Your heart rarely needs to discover what it wants. It needs you to slow down long enough to listen.

Heart-Centered Living Changes the World

In my book I write that it is through living a heart-centered life that we find our true selves, our true purpose and our innate power to change the world. Even the most intellectual people notice the difference in a heart-centered person, even if they cannot explain what it is.

When you live from your heart, you become a living invitation for others to do the same. Your relationships deepen, your work gains meaning and the people around you begin to soften. One open heart creates ripples far beyond what you can see.

Your Heart and Your Body

Caring for your physical heart supports your connection to your energetic heart. Gentle movement, time in nature, nourishing food, laughter, rest and loving connection all keep your heart strong and open. When your body feels cared for, it becomes easier to slow down and listen.

Journal Prompts for Listening to Your Heart

  • What does my heart long for that my mind keeps arguing with?
  • When have I followed my heart, and what happened?
  • What daydream keeps returning to me?
  • Who makes my heart feel open and safe?
  • What is one step my heart is asking me to take this week?

When your mind races with reasons and worries, pause and breathe into your heart. The mind speaks in shoulds. The heart speaks in quiet knowing and warmth.

Often a sense of warmth, openness or calm certainty in your chest, a quiet knowing or a gentle longing that returns again and again.

Ideally both, with your heart leading and your mind following. Your heart gives direction. Your mind finds practical ways to get there.

Early hurts lead the mind to create protection programs that take the driver’s seat. Gentle, regular heart practices invite your heart to lead again.

Begin with small choices, honor what your heart tells you in low-stakes moments and let trust grow gradually. Healing old hurts makes your heart’s voice clearer.
