How to Find Your Passion in Life: Decode the Clues Your Heart Leaves You

How to Find Your Passion in Life: Decode the Clues Your Heart Leaves You

You have probably been told to “follow your passion.” And if you have no idea what your passion is, that advice can feel like being handed a map with no destination. Here is the good news: your passion is already inside you, leaving clues everywhere. Learning how to find your passion in life is less about inventing something new and more about recognizing what has been lighting you up all along.

In Brief
How do I find my passion in life?
List what you feel passionate about, what you love to do, what you are naturally good at and what matters most to you. Look for patterns across the four lists and notice what makes your heart beat faster. Dr. Isis Jade teaches that passion grows from what delights you.

This guide comes from the chapters “Identifying the Hidden Messages in Your Life,” “Putting the Puzzle Together” and “I Still Don’t Know What My Mission I’mPossible Is!” in my book Your Mission I’mPossible. You will learn why passion feels hard to find, the four places your passion hides, how to put the clues together, what to do if you are still stuck, my own weekend passion audit and practices to discover what moves you.

What Is Passion, Really?

Passion is the feeling of your heart swelling, your feet barely touching the earth and time disappearing. It is what pulls you forward with energy and joy. In my teaching, passion grows from delight. The seed of what moves you always begins with what delights you, excites you and lights you up.

Passion is less a single lightning bolt and more a pattern. It shows up again and again in what you love, what you are good at and what matters to you.

Why Can’t I Find My Passion?

  • You have lived for others’ expectations. Many of us followed parents, teachers or friends and never had the freedom to explore.
  • You are overloaded. When responsibilities fill every hour, there is no room to notice what delights you.
  • You are waiting for certainty. Passion often reveals itself through doing, long before you feel sure.
  • An old wound shut it down. One harsh comment can make you abandon something you loved for years.
  • Your energy is depleted. Exhaustion and heaviness quiet passion. Rest and small delights awaken it.

What Causes a Lack of Passion?

A lack of passion usually reflects a disconnection from delight. When life fills with obligation, stress and survival mode, the part of you that longs to create and explore goes quiet. If a lack of interest in everything lasts for weeks or feels heavy, please reach out to a licensed professional, because sometimes low passion is a sign your whole system needs care.

My Weekend Passion Audit

One night at 3am, sitting at my kitchen table, I decided to count how many weekends I had truly felt alive. Weekends are when most of us let our hair down and really live. I had been alive about 1,820 weekends.

I listed every source of real, heart-swelling passion in my life: business ideas, love, my children, my horses, friends. Then I estimated how many weekends each had truly filled me with passion. The total was about 286. Out of 1,820 weekends, I had felt truly alive for only 286 of them.

That number changed everything. It showed me exactly where my passion lived: my children, my horses, deep connection and work that mattered. And it woke me up to how much of my life I had spent asleep. That night I decided to live radically differently. You will find this audit as a practice below.

The Four Places Your Passion Hides

You leave constant messages for yourself about your passion in the things you love, do and enjoy. Think of yourself as Indiana Jones, deciphering clues. Take four sheets of paper and list ideas for each of these:

1. Subjects you feel passionate about

Topics you think about, read about, study and return to often: personal growth, education, art, music, animals, spirituality, the environment, business, health.

2. Activities you love to do

Tangible activities: hiking, painting, singing, writing, cooking, designing, gardening, dancing, woodworking, teaching.

3. What you are naturally good at

Things you do easily and well, tangible and intangible. For me, it is easy to have a deep heart-to-heart conversation with anyone, even though I am shy in groups. Perhaps you are a natural mediator, organizer or encourager. Explore more in how to find your hidden talents.

4. What is most important to you

Causes, groups, people, animals and situations that tug at your heart and that you long to see change, beyond your own family and life.

Focus on the most obvious answers, the things that have been a major part of your life. We never leave ourselves clues that are impossible to decipher.

Putting the Puzzle Together

Now look across your four lists. Do you see connections or patterns? Here is a way to make the picture clearer. Imagine you are preparing for a journey:

  • What you love to do becomes the vehicle you travel in.
  • Your natural talents become the map that shows you the way.
  • What matters most to you becomes the destination.
  • Your passion becomes the fuel that powers the whole journey.

An example

Imagine someone whose lists include cooking and working out, a passion for health and fitness, a talent for encouraging people, and a deep care for children. That person might become a trainer specializing in children’s fitness, speak at schools and community events, and later write family cookbooks. One set of lists can open many directions.

You will know you are on the right track when your creative juices start to flow, your heart rate speeds up, your mind races with ideas and excitement bubbles up from within.

How Do I Find My Passion and Purpose?

Passion and purpose are close companions. Passion is the fuel. Purpose is the direction. When you bring together what you love, what you are good at and what matters most, you find both at once. Every powerful purpose needs four ingredients: a passion for it, a commitment to it, a tangible way to share it with the world and the ability to take it on. Learn more in how to find your purpose in life.

Still Stuck? Five More Places to Look

Think back to a more magical time

Children naturally gravitate toward what they enjoy. What did you love most as a child? Which toys, shows and games were your favorites? What did you dream of being? These memories hold clues to your authentic self.

Look at your bookshelves

Books are windows into other worlds and into yourself. Which topics fill your shelves? Which books are dog-eared from rereading? If you don’t own many, wander a library and notice which sections make you stop.

Check your browser and your feed

What websites, videos and groups do you return to again and again? Your saved posts and favorites are a map of your interests.

Notice your social life and your longings

What do you love doing with friends? What activities do you always wish you had time for? A twinge of longing in an art museum or a garden is a clue.

Notice what secretly makes you envious

Think of a time you felt envious of someone’s success. What exactly stirred you? Envy holds a hidden message about what your heart truly wants. Read more in what is my jealousy telling me.

A Client Story: Joy and the Art Store Window

In Your Mission I’mPossible I share the story of a client I call Joy. On the surface, Joy was anxious, stressed and busy serving everyone else. She told me she had no idea what she really wanted.

Underneath, her heart told a different story. Joy was a deeply creative artist who loved sculpting beautiful pieces from found objects, turning the ugly into a divine message. Years earlier, her husband had laughed at one of her creations, and she put her art away and never touched it again. Every time she passed an art store, she would stare longingly into the window, then hurry along shaking her head.

Over two or three sessions, we uncovered that history and introduced her to her true heart self for the first time in twenty-two years. Her passion had never left. It had simply been waiting at the art store window. Yours may be waiting somewhere just as close.

Passion Begins With Delight

Delight is the hidden force of creation, the core vibration your soul is wired to nourish itself on. When you follow what delights you, passion ignites naturally. A delight shared between two souls is a delight squared, and that momentum creates energy, joy and abundance.

So if you feel far from passion, start smaller. What delights you today? A song, a walk, a conversation, a color? Follow those small delights, and they lead you to your bigger passions. Learn more in how to receive the desires of your heart.

Signs You Have Found Your Passion

  • You lose track of time when you are doing it.
  • You feel more energized afterward, even when you worked hard.
  • You think about it in the shower and on walks.
  • You want to learn everything about it.
  • Obstacles feel like puzzles to solve.
  • You light up when you talk about it, and people notice.

Finding Your Passion When Life Is Busy

If your days are full of work, family and responsibilities, passion can feel like a luxury. Begin with fifteen minutes. Give one small block of time each week to exploring something that calls you. Spending even an hour a day on meaningful activities creates a satisfaction that seeps into every other part of your life. Explore how to pursue your dreams while working full time.

Passion at Every Stage of Life

Your passions can shift as you grow. What lit you up at twenty may differ from what moves you at fifty, and that is a sign of growth. Some passions stay with you for life. Others arrive for a season, teach you something and make way for the next. Hold your passions lightly and let them evolve. Your purpose evolves with you for the rest of your life.

How to Keep Your Passion Alive

  • Protect regular time for it. Passion fades without attention.
  • Keep learning. New skills and ideas reignite curiosity.
  • Share it. Passion multiplies when shared. A delight shared is a delight squared.
  • Rest. Exhaustion dims every flame. Rest keeps it bright.
  • Remember your why. Write down why this matters to you and reread it on hard days.
  • Play. Keep some part of your passion free of goals and pressure.

Choose One and Begin

Once your lists start revealing possibilities, resist the urge to chase them all. Following everything at once is a surefire way to get scrambled and end up where you started. Choose the one that speaks most powerfully to you, the one that makes you feel excited and joyful, and go after it fully. You can always add others later.

Many of us have a little commitment phobia, afraid of choosing wrong. Remember that you can always make a new choice. What matters is that you commit and follow through long enough to discover what this path holds.

Practice One: The Four Lists

  1. Take four sheets of paper and title them: Passionate About, Love to Do, Naturally Good At, Most Important to Me.
  2. Set a timer for ten minutes per page and write everything that comes.
  3. Lay the pages side by side and circle anything that appears in more than one form.
  4. Draw lines connecting related items across pages.
  5. Write three possible combinations, like the fitness and children example above.
  6. Read them aloud and notice which one makes your heart beat faster.

Practice Two: Your Weekend Passion Audit

  1. Calculate the weekends you have lived: multiply your age by 52.
  2. List every source of true, heart-swelling passion in your life so far.
  3. Estimate how many weekends each one truly filled you with passion.
  4. Add them up and compare the total to your weekends lived.
  5. Notice which sources gave you the most weekends of aliveness.
  6. Write: “I choose to give more of my weekends to…” and plan one this month.

Practice Three: The Childhood Joy Map

Write down five favorite memories from childhood that bring back a warm glow. For each, ask: why did this make me so happy? What quality lived in that moment: freedom, creativity, adventure, connection, mastery? Then ask how you can bring that quality into your life this week.

Common Mistakes When Searching for Your Passion

  • Waiting for a lightning bolt. Passion usually grows through doing.
  • Thinking it has to be your career. Your passion can live in your free time, your volunteering or your art.
  • Following someone else’s passion. Borrowed passions fade. Yours endure.
  • Trying everything at once. Choose one, commit, then expand.
  • Dismissing what comes easily. What feels effortless to you is often your greatest gift.

Practice Four: The Passion Experiment Month

  1. Choose four possible passions from your lists.
  2. Assign one to each week of the coming month.
  3. Each week, spend at least two hours exploring it: a class, a project, a book, a conversation with someone who does it.
  4. After each week, rate your energy, joy and curiosity from one to ten.
  5. At the end of the month, compare the scores.
  6. Choose the highest to pursue more deeply next month.

Experiments turn guessing into knowing. You learn more about your passion in one month of doing than in a year of thinking.

Your Passion Serves Others Too

When you follow your passion, something beautiful happens. Your joy becomes contagious. People are drawn to your energy, inspired by your example and served by your gifts. The question shifts from “what’s in it for me?” to “what more can I do to serve and delight those around me?” That shift turns passion into purpose.

Journal Prompts for Finding Your Passion

  • When does time disappear for me?
  • What did I love before anyone told me what I should love?
  • What topic could I talk about for hours?
  • What problem in the world moves me to tears?
  • If money and time were no object, how would I spend my days?
