There may be a gift inside you that everyone around you can see, except you. Hidden talents often feel so natural to us that we dismiss them as ordinary. Learning how to find your hidden talents means turning toward what comes easily, what others thank you for and what your soul keeps quietly offering, and then giving it room to grow.
This guide comes from the chapter “Discovering the Gifts of Your Soul” in my book Your Mission I’mPossible, along with the chapters on hidden messages and why you are completely unique. You will learn what hidden talents are, why we miss them, my own story of a gift I never knew I had, the clues that reveal your talents, how to tell if a talent is born or made, and practices to uncover and cultivate your gifts.
What Are Hidden Talents?
Hidden talents are natural abilities you have not yet recognized, developed or expressed fully. In my teaching, gifts are embedded within your soul. They are talents that flow in natural harmony with your essence. A true talent feels right to you somehow. When you align with your natural gifts, you reach a level of mastery that opens the way to greater success, joy, ease and grace.
The process of discovering them is about uncovering what is already there. You are never creating something out of nothing. Your gifts have been with you all along.
Why We Miss Our Own Talents
- They feel too easy. What flows naturally for you can feel like nothing special, so you overlook it.
- Someone dismissed them. A single criticism can bury a gift for decades.
- They do not fit expectations. Talents that do not match family or cultural ideas of success often go unnoticed.
- Fear of being seen. Expressing a gift means being visible, and visibility can feel risky.
- You never had room to explore. Busy lives leave little space to experiment.
My Own Hidden Gift
For years I never felt I could communicate as well out loud as I do in writing. Part of the reason is that I suffered an injury during my time in captivity that affected the speaking areas of my brain. I had to learn to process information in a whole new way. Writing felt safe and comfortable.
I was also raised to believe I should not be heard, that my voice did not matter. Someone once told me my voice was terrible, too soft to be heard. So I didn’t try. Speaking publicly terrified me, because it meant facing old fears of being seen and recognized.
Then my clients began telling me I have the voice of an angel, and that I need to speak and teach more. When I listened back to early recordings of myself, I was humbled by the knowledge and wisdom coming through. I truly had no idea I had this gift. Today speaking and teaching are central to my work. A hidden talent can sit quietly for years, waiting for you to be ready.
Is Talent Born or Made?
Both. Every person is born with natural inclinations, the seeds of their gifts. Those seeds grow through attention, practice and joy. A talent you were born with may stay small if it is never nurtured, and a modest inclination can become extraordinary through devotion. Your job is to find your seeds and give them sunlight.
How Can I Identify My Talents?
Notice what comes easily
List things you do easily and well, both tangible skills and intangible qualities. Perhaps you are a natural mediator, you make people feel at ease, you organize chaos, you see patterns others miss or you explain complex ideas simply.
Notice what people ask you for
What do friends, family and colleagues come to you for? Advice, comfort, ideas, fixing things, planning trips? The requests people bring you are a map of your gifts.
Notice what people thank you for
Think of the compliments that surprised you. “You always know what to say.” “You make this look so easy.” These are often your hidden talents, named by someone who sees you clearly.
Notice what you did as a child
Children naturally gravitate toward their gifts. What did you spend hours doing? What did adults say you were good at before you learned to doubt yourself?
Notice what absorbs you
Talents often live where time disappears. When you are fully absorbed, your gift is usually at work.
Notice where you feel a stirring
Have you ever watched someone doing something beautifully and thought, “I could do that”? That inner resonance is a clue. When you feel a strong pull toward something you see, hear or read, it is there for a reason.
What Are Some Common Hidden Talents?
- Listening: people feel heard and safe with you.
- Encouraging: you lift others up naturally.
- Storytelling: you make ideas come alive.
- Organizing: you bring order and calm to chaos.
- Connecting: you bring the right people together.
- Problem-solving: you see solutions others miss.
- Creating beauty: through art, food, design, gardens or spaces.
- Teaching: you explain things so they finally make sense.
- Healing presence: people feel calmer around you.
- Intuition: you sense what others need before they say it.
Your Talents Are Uniquely Yours
There is something completely unique about you. No one else in the Universe has exactly what you can offer, and no one else can touch people’s lives exactly as you can. Everything you create is infused with your unique essence.
Many of us were taught to think small, be humble and see ourselves as average. Seeing yourself as gifted is simple self-confidence and clarity. You are different, unique and equally valuable. When you awaken your own brilliance and share it, you encourage others to do the same.
From Talent to Purpose
Your talents are the map that shows you how to reach your purpose. When you bring together the needs of the people you are meant to serve with your gifts, your talents and your story, something powerful happens. You begin turning yourself inside out, and you transform your pain and your gifts into acts of creation that delight the world. Explore how to find your passion in life and how to turn pain into purpose.
Hidden Talents and the Fear of Being Seen
For many of us, the biggest barrier to our gifts is the fear of being visible. Expressing a talent means being seen, heard and possibly judged. If you were taught to stay small or quiet, stepping forward with your gift can feel genuinely frightening.
I know this deeply. For years, speaking meant facing old fears of being recognized by someone who wanted to harm me. What carried me forward was remembering who I serve. When you focus on the people your gift can uplift, the fear of being seen softens. Your talent becomes a gift you give, and that changes everything.
Start in safe spaces. Share your gift with one trusted person, then a small group, then a little wider. Each time, your nervous system learns that being seen can feel good.
Signs a Talent Wants to Grow
- You keep coming back to it, even after long breaks.
- You feel a quiet ache when you are not using it.
- People keep asking you for it.
- Opportunities to use it seem to appear on their own.
- You feel most like yourself when you are doing it.
- You daydream about doing more of it.
Using Your Talents in Everyday Life
At work
Talk with your manager or team about the tasks that bring out your best. Offer to take on projects that use your natural gifts. Many people transform their work by shifting toward their strengths.
In relationships
Your gift for listening, humor, planning or encouragement enriches every relationship. Share it generously with the people you love.
In your community
Volunteer your talent where it is needed: teach a skill, organize an event, mentor a young person or create something beautiful for a shared space.
In your own joy
Some talents are simply for your own delight. Painting only for yourself, singing only in the car, gardening only for your soul. Those count too.
Every Star Shines Its Brightest
If only a few stars shone at night, we would never have the beautiful tapestry of the night sky. Every star shines its brightest. Every horse knows to be a horse. Every tree grows toward its mightiest possible form. Not one questions its design. Your talents are part of your design, and the world is more beautiful when you let them shine.
Talents Hidden in Your Hardest Experiences
Some of your greatest gifts were forged in difficulty. Surviving a hard childhood may have given you deep empathy. Caring for a sick parent may have revealed a gift for calm presence. Rebuilding after loss may have awakened resilience and resourcefulness. When you bring together your gifts, your story and the people you are meant to serve, your pain becomes an act of creation and a gift of healing. Read how to turn pain into purpose.
From Talent to Mastery
A natural talent is a beginning. Mastery comes from devotion: steady practice, honest feedback and a willingness to keep improving. My English teacher’s words, “Never stop improving,” have guided me for decades. When you align yourself with your natural gifts and keep developing them, you reach a level of mastery and subtlety that opens the way to greater success, joy, health, ease and grace throughout your life.
How to Cultivate a Hidden Talent
Give it time
Choose one talent and give it regular attention, even fifteen minutes a few times a week.
Learn from people ahead of you
Find teachers, mentors, books and courses. Follow the footsteps of people who have developed similar gifts.
Share it in small ways
Offer your gift to one person. Feedback from people you serve shows you how your talent lands and how to refine it.
Invest in it with joy
Cultivate your gifts with awareness, compassion and joy. Choosing to invest in them rewards you with so much.
Release perfectionism
Every master was once a beginner. Allow yourself to be new, imperfect and growing.
A Second Story: The Teacher Who Saw My Gift
When I was young, my mother dismissed my writing as worthless, and I stopped writing for years. Then my Honors English teacher asked why I didn’t write more and told me to bring him ten pages by Monday. I filled an entire journal over that weekend. When he returned it, he had written: “You were born to write. Never stop improving.” For the rest of the year, I gave him writing every Monday, and he returned it with questions and critiques every Friday.
Sometimes a hidden talent needs one person who sees it. Sometimes you become that person for yourself. And sometimes you become that person for someone else.
Practice One: The Five Voices Exercise
- Choose five people who know you well from different parts of your life.
- Ask each one: “What do you think I am naturally good at? What do you come to me for?”
- Write down their answers without arguing or downplaying them.
- Look for words that repeat across answers.
- Circle the talent that surprises you most. Explore it this month.

Practice Two: The Effortless Inventory
- For one week, carry a small notebook.
- Each time something feels easy for you that seems hard for others, write it down.
- Each time you lose track of time, write what you were doing.
- Each time someone thanks or compliments you, write what for.
- At the end of the week, group your notes into themes.
- Name your top three talents in one sentence each.
Practice Three: The Talent Experiment
Choose one possible talent and design a small experiment for the next thirty days: take a beginner class, offer to lead a small project, write a short piece, host a gathering or volunteer your skill. Notice how it feels, what flows and what you want more of. Experiments turn guesses into knowing.
Common Mistakes When Looking for Your Talents
- Only counting impressive skills. Quiet gifts like listening and encouraging are powerful talents.
- Comparing yourself to experts. Compare yourself to yourself a month ago.
- Waiting to feel confident. Confidence follows practice.
- Ignoring what others see. People often see your gifts more clearly than you do.
- Believing old criticism. One person’s opinion never defines your gift.
Practice Four: The Childhood Gifts Recall
- Close your eyes and picture yourself at seven or eight years old.
- Remember what you did when no one told you what to do. Drawing? Making forts? Organizing games? Caring for animals? Telling stories?
- Remember what adults praised you for before you learned to doubt yourself.
- Write three gifts your younger self clearly had.
- For each, write how that gift shows up in your life today, even quietly.
- Choose one to nurture this month.
Children naturally gravitate toward their gifts. Your younger self left you a map. All you need to do is read it.
Talents and Your Divine Right People
In Your Mission I’mPossible I write that your purpose comes alive when you bring together the needs of your divine right people, the people you are meant to serve, with your gifts and talents. Your talents become far more powerful when they meet someone who needs them.
Ask: who lights up when I use this gift? Who struggles with something I do easily? Those people are often the ones your talents are meant for. When you find them, your gift turns from a private ability into a source of joy and transformation for others.
Your Gifts Are Embedded in Your Soul
Your talents are not random. They are embedded within your soul, flowing in natural harmony with your essence. When you align with them, life feels easier, more joyful and more meaningful. You came here fully prepared, right from birth, with everything you need to share your unique light. Your job is simply to uncover it.
