Most of us look in the mirror dozens of times a day and almost never truly see ourselves. We check our hair, judge our skin, rush on. Mirror work turns that ordinary moment into a doorway. Learning how to do mirror work means looking into your own eyes with the tenderness you long to receive, and meeting the real you behind the reflection.
This guide comes from the chapters “Fall Head Over Heels in Love With You Today,” “It’s Time to Meet the Real You” and “The Rite of Passage to Your Heart” in my book Your Mission I’mPossible. You will learn what mirror work is, why it is so powerful, the two versions of you, my step-by-step mirror practice, what to expect, a sacred self-love ritual, words to speak and how to make mirror work a daily habit.
What Is Mirror Work?
Mirror work is the practice of looking into your own eyes in a mirror and offering yourself love, acceptance and kind words. Many teachers have shared versions of it over the years. In my teaching, mirror work is a way to meet your true heart self, the magnificent, loving being who lives beneath the false identity your mind has constructed.
It sounds simple. For many people, it is one of the most confronting and transformative practices they ever try.
Why Is Mirror Work So Powerful?
You cannot resist it when someone looks lovingly into your eyes. When that someone is you, something deep shifts. Mirror work bypasses the busy mind and speaks directly to your heart.
- It reveals how you truly feel about yourself, often instantly.
- It interrupts years of harsh self-talk.
- It allows you to give yourself the love you have been seeking from others.
- It connects you with your true self beneath the shell identity.
- It strengthens self-worth, which shapes everything you create.
Self-Love Is the Foundation of Everything
Many of us were taught that loving ourselves is selfish or vain. It is neither. In Your Mission I’mPossible I write that to create a brand new life filled with magic and possibility, you have to utterly believe you are worth the effort. You cannot do it only for your family, your children or a lover. You have to do it for you, or the change will not hold.
Until you love yourself, accept yourself and treat yourself like the creator you are, no one else will. You deserve to be loved. You deserve to be accepted. And you deserve to have your dreams come true.
The Two Versions of You
There are two versions of you. The first is the one you show the world: your shell identity, your false self, what I call your tiny mind. It is run by fear and desire, and its emotions are often dissatisfaction, frustration, stress and anxiety. This is the self you stare at in the mirror and berate.
The second is your core heart self: loving, creative, passionate and wise. Mirror work is how you look past the first to meet the second.
Meet Joy
In my book I describe a client I call Joy. On the surface, Joy was anxious, worried and quick-tempered. She pretended to be happy while secretly feeling unhappy and envious. She felt outdated and stuck. That was Joy’s tiny mind self.
In her heart, Joy was deeply loving, generous and creative. She loved sculpting beautiful art from found objects and dreamed of leading an organization dedicated to children. Years earlier, her husband had laughed at one of her creations, and she put her art away. Over a few sessions, we introduced her to her true heart self for the first time in twenty-two years. Mirror work is one of the ways you can make that introduction to yourself.
How to Do Mirror Work: The Step-by-Step Practice
This is the practice from Your Mission I’mPossible. Give yourself at least fifteen minutes the first time.
- Create your space. Close and lock the door. Light a few candles. Let this feel sacred.
- Center yourself. Take several deep, cleansing breaths.
- Look at your physical self. Stand before the mirror and look at your hair, the shape of your face, your eyes, your mouth, your clothes. Take in every detail without judgment. This is the body your mind has been directing.
- Move closer. Bring your face close to the mirror.
- Look deep into your own eyes. Gaze as if you were looking into the eyes of a long-lost love: lovingly, longingly. Imagine wrapping yourself in a great, big hug.
- Keep looking. Take in every detail of your eyes for a minute or two. Notice what feelings rise.
- Stay until you feel the shift. For many, the first feelings are numbness, rejection or fear. Keep looking. You are gazing at the one you have always yearned for. Something will soften.
- Look at your heart. Let your gaze rest where your heart lives in your chest. This is your center, the source of your true power.
- Touch your face. Lovingly, gently, touch your reflection or your own cheek.
- Speak to your heart self. Say, “I love you.” Say it again. Let it land.
What to Expect During Mirror Work
Mirror work can bring up surprising feelings. You may feel awkward, silly, emotional or resistant. You may hear your inner critic loudly. You may cry. All of this is normal. It shows you exactly where love is needed.
Stay gentle with yourself. If emotions feel overwhelming, pause, breathe and return another day. Each time you practice, it becomes easier and the shift comes sooner. If mirror work brings up deep pain from past experiences, consider doing this work alongside a licensed professional.
You Are Magnificent
The person looking back at you is a powerful creator. Think about it: you manifested yourself into physical form. Your true self is a capable, magical being of light, waiting to be awakened by true love’s first kiss, and stoked by the fire of a burning desire to fulfill your purpose. It is up to you to wake yourself up. It is up to you to be your own true love.
Words to Speak in the Mirror
Speak these slowly, with full feeling, looking into your own eyes:
- I love you.
- I see you.
- You are worthy of love, exactly as you are.
- I am proud of you.
- Your dreams matter.
- I invoke my true heart self to step forward and live out loud.
- I live my greatest day now.
Choose the words that move you most, or let your heart give you its own.
The Rite of Passage to Your Heart
For a deeper experience, my book offers a sacred self-love ritual, designed to release old paradigms and welcome your true self. Do it once a year, on a birthday or at any turning point.
What you need
Several candles, washable body-safe markers or henna, a body sugar scrub and a bath. Set aside half a day so you can be alone with your body and your heart.
The meadow visualization
Close your eyes and imagine a meadow full of wildflowers bending in a gentle breeze. Walk toward the forest at its edge and follow a path through the trees, hearing birdsong and feeling the soft earth beneath your feet. The path opens into a second meadow with a shimmering pool and a log beside it. Sit on the log. Here, you begin.
Inscribing your body
Draw meaningful symbols and words on your body: messages that make you joyful and strengthen your commitment to yourself. I like to begin with my legs and arms and finish with a beautiful star around my heart. Words have power, so choose them lovingly. Some phrases from my book: “I love me.” “My beautiful dreams are how my heart speaks to me.” “I live from my heart from this day forward.”
The mirror
When you finish, stand in front of the mirror and look at your creation. That is you. You are glowing. Enjoy it.
The sacred bath
Step into your bath slowly, murmuring “I love you” with as much feeling as you can. Imagine you are bathing in the shimmering pool from the meadow. Speak this invocation: “I declare I am no longer a product of my mind, but of my heart. I live with no limit thinking, and no further limits placed upon my life. I can do or be anything I set my heart upon.” Then gently scrub your body with the sugar scrub, imagining you are removing the last shreds of your false self and revealing your true heart self.
Mirror Work and Your Inner Critic
When you look into the mirror, your inner critic may speak up immediately: you look tired, you failed again, who do you think you are? That voice belongs to your tiny mind, the shell identity that learned to protect you through harshness. It is doing its best with old programming.
In mirror work, you meet that voice with love. Notice the critical words, then look deeper into your eyes and offer the opposite truth: “You are doing beautifully. I am here with you.” Over time, the critic softens, because it no longer needs to shout to keep you safe. Your heart takes the lead.
Mirror Work for Specific Needs
For confidence
Stand tall, look into your eyes and say, “I trust you. You can do this.” Speak your next brave step out loud.
For heartbreak
Place a hand on your heart and say, “I am so sorry you are hurting. I am not going anywhere. I love you.” Let yourself be held by your own presence. Read how to heal from heartbreak.
For forgiveness
Look into your eyes and say, “I forgive you for what you did not know. You were doing your best.” Forgiving yourself frees enormous energy.
For gentleness with your body
Thank your body for something it does for you every day: carrying you, breathing for you, holding you. Appreciation opens the door to acceptance.
For your dreams
Speak your dream aloud to your reflection as if it is already true. Watch your own face light up. Your heart recognizes its truth.
Why Mirror Work Opens Your Heart
In Your Mission I’mPossible I teach that your heart is the seat of your soul and your connection to Infinite Intelligence. When you feel pure love for someone, such as your child, there is an opening and warming across your whole chest. No amount of thinking can create that feeling. You have to go beyond thought.
Mirror work invites that same opening toward yourself. When you look at yourself with the love you would give a child, your heart opens, and from an open heart, everything you desire flows more easily.
Mirror Work Is for Everyone
In my book, after describing the Rite of Passage ritual, I add: yes, men must do this too. Mirror work is for every person who has ever been hard on themselves, which is nearly all of us. If it feels unfamiliar, start with just thirty seconds of looking kindly into your own eyes. The practice works whether or not you believe in it at first.
When You Can’t Look Yourself in the Eye
Some people find it nearly impossible to hold their own gaze at first. If that is you, be gentle. Begin by looking at your hands, your shoulders or your heart area in the mirror. Speak kindly to those parts first. Then glance at your eyes for a few seconds, and look away. Each day, stay a little longer.
The difficulty you feel is simply a measure of how much love you have been waiting to receive. Every second you stay is a gift to yourself. Over days and weeks, the gaze becomes softer, warmer and easier, until one day you look into your eyes and smile.
The Power of Your Words
Words carry power. That is why I encourage you to be careful with what you think, speak and even what you write upon your body. Every word you speak in the mirror is an invocation, calling forth who you are becoming. Choose words that feel like a warm hand on your shoulder. Speak them with feeling, and let them land in your heart.
Over time, the words you speak in the mirror become the words you think throughout the day. That is how self-talk transforms: one loving sentence at a time, repeated until it becomes your new inner voice.
Making Mirror Work a Daily Habit
- Start small: two minutes each morning while getting ready.
- Anchor it: practice right after brushing your teeth, so it becomes automatic.
- Use small mirrors: your car mirror or phone camera can work in a pinch.
- Catch the critic: whenever you hear harsh words, look at yourself and replace them with kind ones.
- Track the shift: notice how your self-talk changes over thirty days.
Bioenergized healing tool
Roll it over your heart before you step to the mirror. It softens and opens your heart to receive your own love.

A Thirty-Day Mirror Work Journey
Week one: Look into your eyes for two minutes each morning and say “I love you.” Week two: Add one specific appreciation each day: something you did well, a quality you admire. Week three: Speak to the parts of you that feel hard to love: “I see you. You are safe with me.” Week four: Speak your dreams aloud to yourself: “You are going to…” Then practice the Rite of Passage ritual to celebrate.
Common Mistakes With Mirror Work
- Rushing. The shift often comes after the first uncomfortable minute. Stay.
- Forcing words you don’t believe. Start with something true, like “I am willing to love you.”
- Judging your reaction. Every feeling that arises is welcome information.
- Practicing only when you feel good. Mirror work is most powerful on hard days.
- Giving up after one awkward try. It becomes natural with repetition.
Practice: The Evening Mirror Blessing
Before bed, stand before the mirror for one minute. Look softly into your eyes and name three things you did well today, however small. Then say, “Thank you for showing up today. I love you.” Ending your day this way invites peaceful sleep and wakes you with a kinder voice in your head.
