How to Fill the Void Inside You: Turn Your Life Inside Out

How to Fill the Void Inside You: Turn Your Life Inside Out

You got the thing you wanted. The relationship, the promotion, the purchase, the applause. And for a little while it felt wonderful. Then the familiar hollow feeling crept back in. If you have been searching for how to fill the void inside you, this is the turning point: the fullness you are looking for has been within you all along, and you can begin feeling it today.

This teaching comes from the chapters “How Fear Empties Us and Destroys Our Dreams” and “Being With Your True Self” in my book Manifest Your Dreams, and from The Law of Delight. In this guide you will learn why we feel a void, why outer things never quite fill it, the spiritual meaning of emptiness, how to turn your life inside out, signs of real fullness and practices to fill yourself from within.

Why Do I Feel a Void Inside Me?

Many of us carry a sense that something is missing. It can feel like hollowness, restlessness, numbness or a quiet ache. Often it grows from feeling disconnected: from yourself, from your soul, from what truly delights you.

The emptier and more afraid we feel, the more painful our outer experiences can become. When the mind tells the story that we are empty and that life is painful, life tends to reflect that story back, no matter how hard we push to force a different outcome.

If emptiness feels heavy, constant or comes with thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to a licensed professional or a crisis line in your area. You deserve real support, and this work sits beautifully alongside it.

When Success Still Feels Empty

Over the years I have worked with hundreds of clients, several of them highly successful and powerful. Many had everything that looks like success from the outside. And nearly every one struggled to remember a single moment when they felt truly joyful, fully present and delighted.

That realization can feel devastating. It can also be the beginning of everything. When we reconnected them with what genuinely delighted them, the void began to fill, and their success started to feel like their own.

Where the Void Comes From

  • Disconnection from delight: years of obligation can quiet what lights you up.
  • Borrowed definitions of success: chasing someone else’s dream leaves your own heart hungry.
  • Old pain: unhealed hurts can leave a hollow feeling where joy once lived.
  • Constant distraction: when we never sit with ourselves, we lose touch with our own fullness.
  • Living outside in: expecting people and possessions to give us an inner state.

Each of these can be gently reversed, one day and one delight at a time.

Why Outer Things Never Quite Fill It

Think about this: nearly everything you have ever wanted, a particular outcome, a possession, success, approval or a relationship, carried a hope that it would fill a void you believe you carry inside. You long to feel whole, healed and at peace.

Many of those things arrived and felt fleeting or disappointing. Some you could barely enjoy because you were so afraid of losing them. This is where self-sabotage often begins.

The horse was placed in front of the cart. We expected outer things to give us an inner state. The truth is the reverse: you have the power to become that inner state first, and then you create those things as an extension of yourself.

The Lack-Focused Mind Is Never Satisfied

When the mind lives in fear, it focuses outside of you. It obsesses about lack and “I don’t have,” and it searches for ways to fill the painful emptiness. A skeptical, lack-focused mind says, “Show me the goods and then I’ll feel better.” Whatever it creates, enough is never enough. It keeps judging and projecting to protect itself from pain.

Your Inner Divine Self speaks from fullness. It knows its fullness and its unlimited power. It says, “I am Divine. I am Divine Love and Divine Light. I am DELIGHT. I feel whole, full and content right now, and I am eager for more.”

Why Do I Feel Empty Inside Spiritually?

Spiritual emptiness is often the feeling of separation from your soul. The connection between you and your Inner Divine Self has been covered by pain and distortion, like cobwebs and dust. Your soul has been there the whole time, delighted and at peace, waiting for you to come home.

When you reconnect, the void begins to fill with something no possession can provide: a deep sense of inner knowing, self-love, self-worth, abundance, appreciation and solidity from within.

Ships Come In Over Smooth Waters

There is a beautiful freedom in simply being, without frantically grabbing at things to fix the agony of inner emptiness. When you feel full within, there is space to choose wisely, without rushing for a quick fix. Ships come in over smooth waters.

The fuller you are of delight, wonder and joy, the richer your inner life becomes, and the more satisfying, loving and stable your outer results grow. You also get to feel wonderful before anything arrives. Truly a win for everyone.

MORE: Most Optimal Results and Experiences

Wanting more is natural. Your soul loves to expand. In my teaching, MORE stands for Most Optimal Results and Experiences. When you desire from fullness, more becomes a joyful unfolding of who you are. This changes everything.

Turn Your Life Inside Out

To live from authentic power and authentic happiness, turn your perceptions around 180 degrees, from “outside in” to “inside out.” Become the feeling first. Feel loved, safe and whole now, and let the outer world become an expression of that fullness.

  • Love: become a source of love for yourself, and love arrives as an overflow.
  • Money: cultivate a feeling of abundance and generosity now, and money becomes a tool for sharing delight.
  • Purpose: do what lights you up today, and purpose grows from that light.
  • Approval: approve of yourself first, and the opinions of others lose their power.

Self-Sabotage and the Fear of Losing

When something wonderful arrives while you still feel empty inside, it can be hard to enjoy. You may cling to it, worry about losing it or unconsciously push it away. This is where self-sabotage often lives.

The cause is simple: the thing was carrying a job it could never do, filling a void. When you feel full from within, you can receive good things lightly and enjoy them freely, because your sense of self no longer depends on keeping them.

The Void in Relationships

Many of us hope a partner will finally make us feel whole. We search for the person who will fill the empty space, and when they cannot, disappointment follows. Some people move from relationship to relationship, finding the same feeling each time.

Love grows most beautifully between two people who already feel full. Become a source of love and delight for yourself, and the love you share with another becomes an overflow, a celebration of two whole beings. If you keep meeting the same kind of partner, read why do I keep repeating patterns.

The Void in Your Work

My client David felt burned out and drained at work. When I asked which parts of his job used to bring him joy, he named problem-solving and collaborating with his team.

He began giving his best energy to those parts, handed tasks he disliked to a teammate who loved them and reframed his role as a chance to mentor and celebrate his team. Within weeks his stress dropped and his energy surged. The emptiness at work filled once he returned to what delighted him.

The Void and Money

Shopping, upgrading and acquiring can feel like the fastest way to fill an empty feeling. The thrill of a new purchase is real, and it fades quickly, which is why the urge returns. Some people spend to feel better and then feel worse.

When you feel full within, money becomes a joyful tool. You buy what genuinely delights you, enjoy it fully and feel no pressure to keep chasing the next thing. Notice the moments you reach for your wallet to change how you feel, and pause to ask what you truly need.

What Your Emptiness Is Asking For

Emptiness carries a message. It is often asking for one of these:

  • Connection: with yourself, with people you love, with Source.
  • Meaning: work or activities that feel purposeful to you.
  • Rest: time to simply be, without performing.
  • Expression: a creative outlet for what lives inside you.
  • Delight: moments of joy that are yours alone.

Sit with your emptiness for a moment and ask which of these it longs for. Then give yourself one small dose today.

Inner Contentment Is the Beginning

Inner contentment is the start of the smooth waters you need. It is a quiet, steady peace that does not depend on circumstances. From contentment, delight becomes easy to reach, and from delight, the whole of life opens.

Contentment grows with simple practices: unhurried mornings, time in nature, noticing small pleasures, speaking kindly to yourself and resting when you are tired.

Fall in Love With Yourself First

Inner contentment is the beginning of the smooth waters you need. When you fall in total, unconditional love and delight with yourself, and release the blaming, shaming, shoulding and guilting, that state dissolves unnecessary pain in an instant. Your inner radiance shines through like a beacon.

A person fully in true love and delight with themselves becomes utterly magnetic to the Universe and to everyone in it. So your first job is to sit with yourself, delight in the magic of your soul and fall head over heels in love with yourself.

What Will Fill the Void?

Connection with your true self, delight, self-love and a life aligned with what genuinely lights you up. These fill you from within. Outer things then become celebrations of a fullness you already feel.

Signs You Are Filling Yourself From Within

  • You enjoy things more and grip them less.
  • You feel content even before outer things change.
  • Quiet moments feel peaceful.
  • You make choices from desire, free of desperation.
  • You celebrate other people’s good fortune easily.
  • Delight shows up throughout your day.

Common Mistakes When Trying to Fill the Void

  • Looking for one big fix. Fullness grows from many small moments of connection and delight.
  • Judging the empty feeling. Emptiness is an invitation. Meet it with curiosity.
  • Staying constantly busy. Busyness can cover the feeling without filling it. Make space to be with yourself.
  • Waiting for the right person or achievement. Those are lovely additions to a full life. Begin feeling full now.
  • Going it alone when it feels heavy. Reach out to someone you trust or a licensed professional.

Practice Two: The Inside-Out Inventory

  1. List three things you have been chasing to feel better.
  2. Beside each, write the feeling you hope it will give you.
  3. For each feeling, write one way you can give it to yourself today.
  4. Choose one and do it within the day.
  5. That evening, write how it felt to become the source of that feeling.

Practice Three: The Delight List

  1. Write a list of fifty small things that delight you: scents, songs, places, textures, colors, people, moments.
  2. Keep the list somewhere you will see it every day.
  3. Each morning, choose three to enjoy that day.
  4. Each evening, tick off the ones you enjoyed and notice how you feel.
  5. Add new delights as you discover them.

Practice Four: The Appreciation Diary

When my client Samantha was going through a painful divorce, a joy-filled appreciation diary became her lifeline. For one week, she wrote only the small moments she appreciated and enjoyed. Her resilience grew and her clarity returned.

Try it yourself: each night for seven days, write five moments you appreciated and how each one felt. Read the whole week back on the seventh day. Most people are surprised by how full their life already is.
