How to Spread Joy: Become a Delight Maker in Your Corner of the World

How to Spread Joy: Become a Delight Maker in Your Corner of the World

Think of the last time someone’s joy lifted your whole day: a stranger’s laugh, a friend’s excited phone call, a child squealing with delight. Joy is one of the most contagious forces there is. Learning how to spread joy means becoming a source of light for the people around you, and discovering that every bit of joy you share comes back to you multiplied.

In Brief
How do I spread joy?
Smile more, be fully present with people, share moments of delight, celebrate others, offer kind words, do small acts of kindness, play together and share your gifts. Dr. Isis Jade teaches that a delight shared is a delight squared.

This guide comes from my book DELIGHT: An Enlightened Path to Transforming Life, Spontaneously, especially “A DELIGHT Shared Is A DELIGHT Squared” in Chapter 2 and “The DELIGHT Makers” in Chapter 15. You will learn what it means to spread joy, why joy is contagious, the Delight Squared Effect, why you must fill yourself first, simple ways to spread joy every day and practices to become what I call a Delight Maker.

What Does It Mean to Spread Joy?

Spreading joy means sharing your delight, kindness and light with others in ways that uplift them. It can be as simple as a smile, as personal as a handwritten note or as big as a community celebration. At its heart, it is letting your own joy overflow toward the people around you.

Can Joy Be Contagious?

Yes. Most of us have experienced it: one person’s laughter sets off a whole room, a friend’s excitement fills you with energy, a performer’s joy lifts an entire audience. In my book I describe watching audiences moved by delight, people turning to each other wide-eyed and pointing, the performers lifted even higher by the sparkle in the faces before them.

In my experience, delight sweeps through a crowd far faster than fear does. A whole room gasps at once. Applause erupts seemingly from nowhere. Joy wants to be shared.

A Delight Shared Is a Delight Squared

When something truly delights us, we feel we might burst if we don’t share it. And when we do share it, our own joy grows. I call this the Delight Squared Effect. Sharing joy does not divide it. It multiplies it.

This is why strangers come together to celebrate, why we call a friend the moment we hear good news and why we can’t stop smiling after making someone else smile. We have a deep, instinctual need to share our delight, and the sharing amplifies it for everyone.

Fill Your Own Cup First

In my book I write that unless you become the source of your own greatest joy and delight, you have little to give anyone. Spreading joy begins within. When you are depleted, joy feels like an obligation. When you are full, joy overflows naturally.

Your delight and prosperity are some of the greatest gifts you can use to change the world. Selflessly seek your own delights in life, and let them radiate outward. Read the difference between happiness and joy.

Your Energy Touches Everyone Around You

Every person you meet feels your energy, whether you speak or not. When you walk into a room carrying delight, people sense it. They soften, smile and open. Radiant bliss is something everyone responds to. People are drawn to it, want to contribute to it and want to share in it.

This is why your joy matters far beyond yourself. Each time you choose delight, you offer everyone around you an invitation to do the same.

Simple Ways to Spread Joy Every Day

Smile more

A genuine smile is one of the simplest gifts you can give. In my book I suggest smiling more often and finding at least one person to laugh with each day, then seeing what happens.

Be fully present

Take a few minutes to be completely present with someone today. Put your phone away, look them in the eyes and listen. Presence is a profound form of joy.

Share a moment of delight

Tell someone about something that delighted you. Send a photo of a beautiful sky. Share a funny story. Invite them into your joy.

Celebrate others

Cheer for other people’s wins loudly and sincerely. Celebration spreads joy fast.

Offer kind words

Give specific compliments. Write a thank-you note. Tell someone what they mean to you.

Do small acts of kindness

Hold a door, pay for a coffee, bring flowers to a neighbor, leave an encouraging note.

Play

Invite friends or family into play: games, dancing, silly adventures. Shared play is pure joy.

Share your gifts

Cook for someone, sing, teach a skill, create something beautiful. Your gifts carry your joy into the world.

Spreading Joy at Work

Workplaces often run on stress, and one joyful person can shift the culture. Greet people warmly. Celebrate team wins. Bring curiosity and humor to meetings. Recognize colleagues for their contributions. Bring treats on an ordinary Tuesday. Joy at work creates connection, creativity and better results.

Spreading Joy at Home

At home, joy grows through rituals: shared meals, dance parties in the kitchen, bedtime stories, inside jokes, family adventures. Notice what delights each person you love and make room for it. Delight in your family, and they will feel it.

Spreading Joy in Your Community

Volunteer, organize a neighborhood gathering, support local creators, plant flowers in a shared space. Communities flourish when people share their delight with each other.

Spreading Joy When You Don’t Feel Joyful

Some days, joy feels far away. On those days, small acts of kindness can actually lift your own mood. Holding a door or offering a kind word can open a small window of light for both of you. Be gentle with yourself, though. You do not need to perform joy you don’t feel. Rest when you need to, and let others spread joy to you.

Become a Delight Maker

In the final chapter of my book I describe the path of the Delight Maker. Delight Makers understand that a delight shared is a delight squared. They are so delighted with life that they naturally share themselves with everyone around them.

A Delight Maker is an edge walker, a dream weaver, a destiny creator. She is an intrepid explorer of the impossible and a maker of the improbable. She takes “no” as a dare and “you can’t do that” as a challenge. She is fearless because she is so full of light, hope and love. She makes her own song, mixes her own colors and paints her own way, and her delight touches everything around her.

When you follow your heart’s delight and share it freely, you become a Delight Maker too.

The Joy of Sharing

The philosopher Seneca wrote that there is no delight in owning anything unshared. Joy kept to ourselves stays small. Joy shared grows into connection, community and celebration. The more you share, the more you have.

Practice One: The Daily Delight Share

  1. Each day, notice one thing that delights you.
  2. Share it with someone: a message, a photo, a story, a call.
  3. Notice their response and how it makes you feel.
  4. Write the share and your feeling in a small journal.
  5. After thirty days, read back through your entries.

Practice Two: The Joy Ripple Week

For seven days, do one intentional act of joy for someone else each day: a note, a gift, a compliment, a surprise, an offer of time. Choose different people each day. Notice how the ripples spread and how your own joy grows.

Practice Three: The Presence Gift

Choose one person this week and give them one hour of your full, undivided presence. No phones, no multitasking. Listen deeply, laugh together and enjoy each other. Presence is one of the rarest and most joyful gifts in modern life.

Common Mistakes When Trying to Spread Joy

  • Giving from an empty cup. Fill yourself first.
  • Forcing cheerfulness on others. Meet people where they are.
  • Expecting something back. Joy given freely multiplies.
  • Thinking only big gestures count. Small moments matter most.
  • Forgetting yourself. Let others spread joy to you too.

The Original Delight Makers

When I was a young child, my neighbor, an elderly retired engineer and lifelong traveler, told me stories that shaped my life. She had spent years with the Hopi people preserving their stories, and she showed me figures of the sacred clowns she called the Delight Makers, known among the Pueblo peoples as the Koshare.

As she explained it to me, the sacred clowns used ceremony, dance, music, storytelling, comedy and theater to remind people of the magic they were born from. Through laughter and playful satire, they could bring a community’s weaknesses into the light without shaming any one person. A Hopi elder I once had the honor of meeting described delight as the wisest path to overcoming differences and creating lasting change. These stories planted the seed for everything I teach about spreading delight.

Laughter as Medicine for Communities

The sacred clowns understood something profound: laughter softens defenses. When people laugh together, tension eases, hearts open and difficult truths become easier to hear. You can use this wisdom in your own family, team or community. Gentle humor, play and shared laughter can dissolve conflict faster than argument ever could.

Joy Ripples Outward

Think of a pebble dropped into still water. The ripples spread far beyond where it landed. Your joy works the same way. The barista you smile at carries that warmth to their next customer. The friend you encourage passes your words on to someone else. The child who sees you delighting in life learns that joy is possible. You will never see where most of your ripples go, and they travel further than you can imagine.

Spreading Joy Online

Social media can spread fear and comparison quickly. It can also spread delight. Share beauty you notice, celebrate others publicly, post encouragement, tell uplifting stories and send private messages of appreciation. Before you post, ask: will this add light to someone’s day?

Joy and Your Unique Song

In my book I describe every person as having a unique signature vibrato, an energetic fingerprint that no one else carries. When you share joy in your own way, through your humor, your gifts, your kindness, your music, you add a note to the world that only you can play. Like an orchestra, many unique instruments harmonize into something far more beautiful than any one alone.

Joy Through Generosity

Generosity is one of the purest ways to spread joy: sharing a meal, giving your time, passing on a book that changed your life, supporting someone’s dream. Giving from a full heart feels light and joyful for the giver as well as the receiver. In my book I write that your delight and prosperity are among the greatest gifts you can use to change the world.

Practice Four: The Laughter Gathering

  1. Invite a few friends or family members for an evening of play: games, funny stories, silly challenges or a comedy film.
  2. Ask everyone to put phones away.
  3. Let laughter lead the evening.
  4. At the end, invite each person to share one delight from their week.
  5. Notice how the room feels compared to when everyone arrived.

Laughter shared is one of the fastest ways to spread joy and strengthen connection.

Joy That Asks Nothing

The purest joy you can spread asks nothing in return. A smile to a stranger you will never see again. A kind note left anonymously. A generous tip. A compliment with no agenda. These quiet gifts carry a special kind of light, because they are given freely, for the simple delight of giving.

Joy for Yourself Too

Spreading joy is not only outward. Treat yourself with the same kindness you offer others: speak gently to yourself, celebrate your own wins and enjoy your own company. When you delight in yourself, your joy for others becomes effortless and sustainable. Read how to do mirror work.

A Delight Maker’s Promise

At the close of my book I wrote an invitation that I offer you now: go forth and create delight as if all of your life depended upon it, for indeed, it does. Each day you get to choose whether to add a little more light to the world. A smile, a kind word, a shared laugh, a moment of full presence. These are the tools of a Delight Maker, and they are already in your hands.
