“Surrender to the universe.” “Just let go and surrender.” You hear it from manifestation coaches, tarot readers, intuitives and spiritual teachers everywhere. And every time I hear it, I ask three questions.
Surrender to what? Surrender to whom? Surrender exactly what?
If the word has ever left a strange heaviness in your chest, this article is for you. I’m never going to tell you to surrender. Here is why, and what sovereigns do instead.
This is the written companion to my unscripted Fight Series talk, Sovereigns Don’t Surrender, on YouTube.
Words Are Spells
Every word you speak over yourself carries a meaning and a history. When you say it again and again, in your journal, your meditations, your affirmations, you cast it over your own life.
So where does surrender come from? Old French: “sur,” over, and “rendre,” to give or deliver. To surrender is to give yourself over. To deliver yourself into someone else’s hands.
Look at where we use it. In war, surrender is what the losing side does: lay down its weapons, hand over its land, hand over itself. In law, you surrender a property, a right, a license. A hostage surrenders to a captor.
In every single use, surrender means one thing. You give up your power to someone more powerful than you. It has nothing to do with letting go.
What Surrender Asks You to Hand Over
When someone tells you to surrender, here is what they’re asking for: your power, your boundaries, your morals, your ethics, your standards, your rights, your sense of what you deserve.
And who are you supposed to hand them to? A higher power. Something bigger, stronger, better than you. That’s the oldest enslavement paradigm there is, wrapped in a prettier bow.
Here’s why it lands so easily. When you’re exhausted and grieving and you’ve been fighting for so long, your brain goes into survival mode. Survival mode says give up, just let it take you, so the pain stops. That’s your brain lying to you. And then someone with a soft voice and a candle tells you that giving up is enlightenment.
Why I Have a Right to Talk About This
My name is Dr. Isis Jade. I hold a PhD in Applied Bioenergetics. And in my early twenties, I was abducted and trafficked.
If I had surrendered, I would have died, like so many of the hundreds of thousands of people who are trafficked and enslaved every year. The average lifespan of a person once trafficked is two to seven years, and less than one percent ever make it out. I hold the line for every woman who never survived.
I did not create those circumstances. You didn’t manifest the hurricane, the earthquake, the blindside or the betrayal either. Those are other people’s choices and other forces at play. What I did create was my escape, my healing and my rise.
Years later, I was told I would never walk again. I limped, yes. But I got up and walked out of that hospital. Not once did I have to surrender to get my power back.
Releasing Is a Sovereign Act
Letting go is real. Releasing is real. Stepping back is real. And all of it belongs to you.
You can let go of one battle. You can step back, rest, recharge and come back renewed to fight another day, in another way, in another form. That’s strategy. That’s wisdom. That’s a sovereign making a decision.
When you release, you choose what goes. When you let go of external circumstances, they lose their power over you, because you are the sovereign. The circumstance doesn’t get the crown. You keep the crown.
Sovereigns don’t surrender.
So if surrender has been your word, here are words that keep you on your own throne:
- Release: “I release this outcome.”
- Realign: “I realign with my core.”
- Integrate: “I integrate what this taught me.”
- Resonate: “I choose what resonates with me.”
The Red Flag
If any coach, podcast, video or article tells you to surrender, treat it as a red flag. Most people saying it are repeating a word they never looked up. Listen for what they’re asking you to hand over.
Pull out the three questions. Surrender to what? To whom? Exactly what? If the answer is your boundaries, your standards, your discernment or your no, you know exactly what’s going on. You can’t surrender your power to get your power back.
Practice: Calling Your Sovereignty Home
- Stand with both feet on the floor, knees soft, spine long through the crown of your head.
- Place your dominant hand over your heart and your other hand on your lower belly. Breathe in slowly and out with a sigh, twice.
- Think of one place in your life where you were told to surrender: a relationship, a diagnosis, money, a dream.
- Notice what you handed over there. Your voice? Your boundaries? Your knowing? Your no? See it as a golden thread running from your heart to that place.
- Say out loud: “I am sovereign. I call my power home. I call home my boundaries, my standards, my voice, my knowing and my no.”
- Feel every thread return to your heart, your spine grow taller, and the crown settle back on your head.
- Close with: “I release what no longer serves me. I keep everything that is mine. I choose my delight. Sovereigns don’t surrender.”

Your Assignment This Week
Find every place the word surrender lives in your life: your journals, affirmations, vision board, the meditations you play. Rewrite each one as a sovereign line in this shape: “I release ____. I keep my ____.”
“I surrender the outcome” becomes “I release the outcome. I keep my standards.” “I surrender to the universe” becomes “I release the timeline. I keep my power.”
Then put your hand on your heart and say each new line out loud, once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should you surrender to the universe to manifest?
No. Surrender means handing over your power to something outside you. Manifestation flows from sovereignty: you release what no longer serves you and keep your boundaries, standards and knowing.
What does the word surrender really mean?
It comes from Old French for “to give over.” In war, law and captivity it always means giving up your power to someone more powerful.
What’s the difference between letting go and surrendering?
When you release, you choose what goes and you keep your crown. When you surrender, something else chooses for you. Releasing is a sovereign decision.
What can I say instead of “I surrender”?
Try “I release,” “I realign,” “I integrate” or “I choose what resonates.” For example: “I release the timeline. I keep my power.”
Be delighted. 💋
