You feel it every December. The days shorten, the dark arrives early, and something in you grows quiet and asks a question you have been too busy to hear all year. What am I ready to let go of? What wants to be born? A winter solstice ritual gives that question a sacred home.
That question is the reason a winter solstice ritual calls to you right now. You are standing at the darkest point of the year, and your soul knows exactly what this night is for. I am so glad you found your way here, my sister. This one is for you.
I love the solstice. I love it the way I love a newborn’s first breath. Everything goes still, and then the light turns around and comes home.
What the Winter Solstice Truly Is
The winter solstice is the moment the sun reaches its lowest arc in the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere it falls around December 21 or 22. In the Southern Hemisphere it arrives in June. The word itself comes from Latin roots meaning “the sun stands still.”
For three days the sunrise seems to pause in the same place on the horizon. Then it begins to move again, and every day after holds a little more light than the one before.
Across many ancient traditions, people marked this turning with fire, feasting and vigil. At Newgrange in Ireland, a passage tomb older than the pyramids, the rising sun on the solstice morning sends a beam of light down a long stone corridor and into the inner chamber for about seventeen minutes. Five thousand years ago, human beings shaped stone to catch the exact moment the light returns.
Think about the devotion in that. They knew this night mattered.
I teach the Law of Delight, the first universal law, the one that rules all 777 laws I have documented in my Universal Codex. When you see the solstice through that law, it becomes something even more beautiful. You can read the full teaching in what the Law of Delight is and how it moves through your life. Here is the heart of it.
The universe delighted itself into being. Delight is the primordial catalyst of all creation, and it already lives in you, as unique as your thumbprint. You have nothing to raise, nothing to perform, nothing to become.
What happens over a year is simple. Layers settle over your delight. Disappointment, grief, fear, other people’s expectations, the stories you picked up along the way. The solstice is the season the universe hands you to strip those layers away, so your delight shines clear again.
Why a Winter Solstice Ritual Holds Such Power
The solstice is a turning point, and turning points are creation points.
Your delight moves in a spiral. The Fibonacci spiral, the golden spiral, shows up in galaxies, in seashells, in the seed head of a sunflower. I call it delight’s geometry, and I write about it in golden spiral manifestation and how delight creates with precision.
Every spiral has a still point at its center. The solstice is that still point in the year. The light draws all the way in, rests, and then begins to unfold outward again, wider and fuller with every turn.
When you hold a winter solstice ritual, you place yourself at the center of that spiral on purpose. You let the old year draw all the way in. You let yourself rest in the dark. And you choose, with your whole heart, what you want the light to carry outward with it.
The solstice is quiet and inward, and the quiet is where your heart speaks. If you love the January doorway too, I share how to set intentions from delight in new year manifestation. I treat the solstice as the seed and the new year as the first green shoot.
The Dark Is Sacred
So many women I sit with tell me they dread winter. The early dark feels heavy. It stirs up loneliness and old grief.
I understand. And I want to offer you another way to hold it.
The dark is the sacred cradle of the year. Seeds rest in dark soil before they rise. Stars appear only once the sky goes dark. Your deepest knowing often arrives in the quiet hours, when the noise of the day finally falls away.
Your Tiny Mind, the part of you that runs on fear and survival, wants to rush through the dark and get back to doing. Your Giant’s Heart, the part of you that holds your soul, your delight and your mission, knows the dark is where the new life is forming.
The solstice invites you to trust your Giant’s Heart.
What You Are Releasing, and What You Are Calling Home
Before any ritual, I ask you to get honest with yourself. Gentle, loving, and honest.
What did this year ask of you? What did it give you? Where did your delight go quiet?
Many patterns replay year after year because of something I call Negative Energy Addiction. The familiar ache feels safer than the unknown joy, so the heart keeps returning to it. The solstice is the perfect night to see that loop clearly and lay it down.
You might be releasing a relationship that ended, a version of yourself that kept you small, a money story, a habit of putting yourself last. If loss shaped this year for you, my writing on rising after loss on a phoenix path pairs beautifully with this night.
Then comes the part I love most. Calling home.
What does your heart desire? Your desire is sacred. It is the voice of your soul telling you what it came here to create. In my DELIGHT Roadmap, the very first step is Decide Your Dreams and Desires, your Mission I’mPossible. Alignment needs something to align to. The solstice is the perfect night to name it.
My Winter Solstice Ritual for Rebirth and Renewal
Here is the ritual I use. It takes about an hour on the evening of the solstice, plus a few minutes at sunrise. You can do it alone or with women you love. Delight shared is delight squared.
Gather a candle, paper, a pen, a bowl of water, and something that delights you. A piece of music, a flower, a scent you adore, a sweet treat.
- Darken the room. As evening falls, turn off the lights. Sit with your unlit candle in front of you. Let yourself feel the longest night. Breathe slowly and let the year come to mind, moment by moment.
- Write what you are complete with. On one sheet of paper, write everything you are ready to release. Patterns, beliefs, grief, people you are blessing and letting go. Write until you feel lighter. Then fold the paper and set it in front of the bowl of water.
- Honor the year. Speak out loud three moments of delight from this year, even small ones. A laugh, a sunrise, a kind word. Your delight was there all along, waiting under the layers. Name it so it knows you see it.
- Light the returning sun. Light your candle. This is the moment of rebirth. Say: “The light returns, and so do I.” Sit with the flame and let it fill you with warmth.
- Name your desires. On a fresh sheet, write what your heart desires for the coming year. Write them in present tense, as if they are already alive. Let yourself want boldly. Then read them aloud by candlelight.
- Release the old. Safely burn the first paper in a fireproof dish, or tear it into pieces and drop them into the bowl of water. Watch the old year dissolve. Pour the water onto the earth in the morning.
- Delight yourself. Play your music. Eat your treat. Dance in the candlelight. Laugh. This step carries the whole ritual, because delight is the power that collapses potential into form.
- Greet the sunrise. In the morning, watch the sun rise, or simply open a window to the first light. Place your desire list somewhere you will see it every day.
That is your winter solstice ritual. Simple, potent, and yours.
The 13 Wishes Ritual, Through the Law of Delight
You may have heard of the 13 wishes ritual. It comes from the Alpine folk tradition of the twelve sacred nights that close the year, from December 25 into January 6.
In the classic version, you write 13 wishes on 13 small slips of paper, fold them, and mix them up. Each of the twelve nights, you draw one slip and burn it without reading it, trusting the universe to carry that wish. On the final night, one slip remains. You open it. That last wish belongs to you to bring to life yourself.
I adore this ritual, and here is how I hold it through the Law of Delight.
Write each of your 13 wishes from delight. Before you write each one, close your eyes and feel the joy of it already being real. If a wish feels heavy or obligated, cross it out and write the one your heart truly wants.
Each night, before you burn a slip, take one minute to delight yourself fully. Then release the wish with a smile.
The final wish is your sacred assignment. That is step four of the DELIGHT Roadmap, Inspired Intuitive Action. Ask your heart for the very next step, and take it. I walk through all seven steps in your 7-step DELIGHT pathway.
Some families use 12 wishes, one for each night, with no final slip. That version is lovely too. Choose the one that delights you.
How the Solstice Light Shows Up in Your Life
After your winter solstice ritual, watch closely. The light returns slowly, a minute or two each day. Your rebirth unfolds the same way.
In money, you might notice a new idea arriving, a fresh way to share your gifts, or a sudden ease around a bill that once frightened you.
In love, you might feel softer. A conversation you avoided all year suddenly flows. Someone new appears, or someone familiar sees you with new eyes.
In purpose, you might feel your mission come into focus. That thing you have been circling for years suddenly feels possible.
In everyday moments, you might simply laugh more. You notice the frost on the window, the way the light falls across your kitchen table, the warmth of your tea.
This is the gift of the Law of Rhythm, which I teach in moving with the natural cycles of your life. Every season has its purpose. Winter rests so spring can rise.
Your pen shows you the light returning. I keep a daily page of delight all winter long, and my favorite questions for that page live in my manifestation journal prompts.
You may also love a guided meditation for the long nights. I recorded one called Getting In Sync with the Universe, and it is a beautiful way to settle into the dark before you light your candle.
Questions You May Be Asking
What do you do on the winter solstice for good luck?
Light a candle at dusk to welcome the returning sun, release what you are complete with, and write your desires for the coming year. Then delight yourself fully that evening with music, food and laughter. Delight is the most fortunate state you can carry into a new cycle.
What are traditional winter solstice rituals?
Across many ancient traditions, people kept vigil through the longest night, lit fires and candles, burned a Yule log, feasted with family, and gathered evergreens as a promise of life returning. Ancient sites like Newgrange in Ireland were shaped to catch the solstice sunrise. Every version honors the same truth: the light comes back.
What is the winter solstice ritual with 13 wishes?
You write 13 wishes on slips of paper, burn one unread each of the twelve nights from December 25 into January 6, and open the last slip on the final night. The universe carries the twelve you burned. The thirteenth is yours to bring to life through inspired action.
When should I do my winter solstice ritual?
Do it on the evening of the solstice itself, around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere. The three days around the solstice hold the same still point, so any of those evenings carries the energy beautifully. Greet the sunrise the next morning to complete it.
The Light Is Coming Home to You
Come back to that quiet question you felt at the start. What am I ready to let go of? What wants to be born?
You already know the answer. You have always known. The solstice simply gives you the dark and the stillness to hear it.
So light your candle, my sister. Let the old year dissolve. Name what your heart desires. And when that first sunrise comes, know that you are rising with it. The light is coming home, and so are you.
